Jake Gyllenhaal Talks Dark Movie Role In ‘Nightcrawler:’ Dishes On Playing ‘Six-Dimensional Character’ In New Thriller

Jake Gyllenhaal seems to like acting in dark movies.

The 33-year-old actor is already earning buzz for his portrayal of an L.A. crime journalist in the new thriller "Nightcrawler." He recently opened up to Vulture about the role, which he describes as playing a "six-dimensional character."

"I did not envision myself at all," Gyllenhaal told the publication when asked if he saw himself as crime-chasing journalist Lou Bloom when he first read the "Nightcrawler" script.

"Lou is not just a three-dimensional character. He's a six-dimensional character. He's so well-prepared, he's like the Bobby Fischer of manipulators," explained Gyllenhaal.

The Oscar nominated movie star revealed that although his character makes many questionable choices in the film, he can't help but identify with him.

"Well, one of the beautiful things about the character that Dan [Gilroy, the writer/director] wrote was that nothing he says I would disagree with," said Gyllenhaal. "He's using this corporate kind of speak, self-help, Tony Robbins stuff - and I agree with all of it! I believe in ambition, and that's an important quality for human beings to have. I believe in persistence and discipline and commitment and drive, which are all the things that Lou has. I think about that moment I look down at my phone and I'm scrolling and someone is talking to me, and I'm totally ignoring them, but unconsciously, I'm answering their questions, and that is where that is where that seedling of Lou can bloom in all of us. It's that moment we all look down and say, "Is it the State of the Union I'm going to click on, or am I going to click on the video of the cat that survived falling 40 stories?"

Vulture asked Jake if he feels the need to take on difficult roles in movies now before he settles down and has a family of his own, which may prevent him from committing to fully immersing himself in a character. Gyllenhaal replied that he believes he will always want to jump head first into anything he sets out to do.

"I don't know. I mean, I am a certain animal, and I think I will always be that animal. When I have my own family, there's a belief I have in doing the things that make you happy, and I love modeling that for my family now. Whatever your truth is, it is important for you to continue doing that, but I think, obviously, there is compromise and responsibility when you become an adult," said the star. "You know, Springsteen's thing is that adulthood is about compromise, and it's also about just how much you compromise before you start to compromise yourself. So my plan is to always try and be honest with myself, even if that takes me to darker places. That's the plan, more than, Oh, in two years this is gonna happen in my life, so I gotta fit all this stuff in."

"Nightcrawler" hits theatres on Oct. 31.
