K-Pop Fashion Rebel: 2NE1 CL's Unapologetic Style

Browsing through CL's Instagram is like looking through a catalog of insanely pricey designer garments and exclusive fashion events. You see golden Moschino dresses, intricate Chanel jackets, hot Balmain pants, leather McQueen purses-every girl's dream wardrobe just a scroll away!

CL has been on the cover of practically every magazine in Korea. She has walked the Seoul Fashion Week runway for DKNY, had a fashion collaboration project with the multi-label store On Pedder, and is on first name bases with some of the biggest names in fashion, such as Chanel Creative Director Karl Lagerfeld. When you think of K-Pop style, she is one of the first names that pops to mind.

I will be the first to confess that I have a love-hate relationship with CL's style. The love part includes her penchant for $2,000 pearl sunglasses, studded biker jackets, and flawless mixes of androgynous and feminine pieces. The hate part is mainly her continuous collaborations with Jeremy Scott, which lead to over-styling and cartoon-like combinations of jarring patterns. The best example is the now infamous "Big Bird" one-piece that CL wore for the April issue of i-D Magazine.

But CL will never apologize or explain any of her fashion choices. As she is quoted saying in the very same i-D interview, "The question isn't who is going to let me. It's who is going to stop me?"

The one thing you can't deny about CL is that she has a unique style and a strong point of view when it comes to her image. She has three distinct style personas and she is never afraid to switch between them. Below are three unique looks that represent the different aspects of CL's style.

1. Pink and Studded MCM Jacket & Hannah Marshall Leather Dress

When the music video for "Can't Nobody" was released, one of the most memorable moments was CL sitting on a yellow sun chair surrounded by flashing robots. For the scene, she wore a pink MCM jacket studded with dangerous, spiky triangles. Underneath, she wore a tight Hannah Marshal leather dress that wrapped around her curves and matching leggings for modesty. This outfit screamed hip hop warrior meets on-the-edge vixen. There is always a sensual touch to CL's fashion, even if the outfit is adorned with glittering needles or razor-sharp pins. This outfit epitomizes CL's cocky style personality that matches bold, demure and strangely sexy pieces.

2. Valentino Haute Couture Floral Dress

When CL attended the Valentino Haute Couture fashion show in Paris in July, she was head to toe in the brand. The dress she wore was a petite floral number, which she accessorized with a pink tote and red heels. The look was very soft and feminine. But it had the CL touch, since she had her hair styled in a very Marie Antoinette-like poof. This is the girly style persona that CL embraces from time to time, to show that she can transition from loose jerseys to soft glamor flawlessly. The heiress that steals the spotlight on entry!

3. Leather and Teal Fur Balmain Jacket

When you think of CL, luxury and fur are two combinations that come to mind. When the music video for "Missing You" was released, she wore heavy and plush winter coats in vibrant colors. The most eye-catching piece was the teal fur Balmain jacket used for various close-ups and scenes. Whenever CL was impacted by the artificial wind, the tendrils had a beautiful flow that gave her a lot of vulnerability. For the soft ballad, her makeup wasn't as heavy as usual and her hair was down in a natural manner. This is the CL style persona that chooses a very strong statement piece to carry the entire look, while she experiments with a more toned-down beauty style.

So which is your favorite style personality? Is it the hip hop warrior, the feminie heiress, or the luxury, experimental beauty?
