JYJ Jaejoong Begins Filming New Drama 'Spy' Based On Israeli Show, Hopes To Emulate 'Homeland' Success

JYJ's Kim Jaejoong has begun filming Korea's answer to the popular American spy drama, Homeland.

Jaejoong will star alongside Bae Jong Ok, Go Sung Hee, and Yoo Oh Sung in Spy, KBS2's upcoming drama about spies from the Koreas. Spy is an adaptation of the Israeli spy series, The Gordin Cell (also called MICE by several media outlets,) and will begin airing weeks before an American adaptation of the same show premiers.

Bae Jong Ok will play a North Korean sleeper agent living as a homemaker in South Korea while her son Sun Woo will be played by Kim Jaejoong, works for South Korea's national intelligence agency, NIS. Her loyalties to North Korea will be tested in Spy when she is told to capture her son and bring him to North Korea.  Go Sung Hee will play Jaejoong's love interest, and Yoo Oh Sung will be the main antagonist as a North Korean operative.

Filming for Spy began in December. KBS2 released pictures of Kim Jaejoong on set, wearing a cast while at the National Intelligence Service building.

Israeli television spy shows gained popularity following the successful adaptation of Prisoners of War into Showtime's hit show, Homeland. In 2012, American broadcast network NBC picked up The Gordin Cell to produce under the title Allegiance, and will premier February 5.

Spy is the first Korean drama adapted from an Israeli television show, and representatives of Spy hope that the familial relationship will draw in Korean viewers.

Seock Gu Hong, KBS' chief producer, said that Spy "is a spy drama but at the same time it naturally tells a story about conflicts and reconciliation between family members," said Soeck-gu Hong, KBS chief producer.

Spy will begin airing on KBS2 on January 9, and will broadcast between 9:20 -11PM for a more film-like viewing experience, rather than two nights a week like many Korean dramas.
