Colin Kaepernick Contract Update: 49ers Quarterback Maybe Getting $25.9 Million Instead Of $126 Million; Player’s Salary Could Go Down By $2 Million Per Year

Colin Kapernick Contract Update: The salary of the San Francisco 49ers Quarterback was all the rave recently when he was supposed to get a record-breaking seven-figure contract from the team for $126 million.

But Business Insider reported that after the 27-year-old athlete’s “nightmare season,” he may not get a salary as big as everyone made it out to be. It could be as little as $25.9 million.

The new site noted that the contract he signed last summer gave him a $12.3 million signing bonus and a 2014 salary of only $645,000. He was expected to get his large paycheck amounting to $12.4 million, for the 2015 season. Although the terms could still mean that the pay could go down to $10.4 million.

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com explained that Kapernick’s salary could go down by $2 million every year if he is not named first- or second-team All-Pro, of if the 49ers don’t play in the Super Bowl the previous season with 80% of the snaps taken by the young quarterback.

Kapernick’s team has been eliminated from playoff contention, and he ranks 22nd in quarterback rating, which only means that the salary downgrade will kick in.

Although some have picked up that his new deal included a guaranteed $61 million payout, it turned out that it only applies for injury. The Business Insider adds that, “Each year of the contract, the 49ers can decide to cut Kaepernick before April 1 and will not owe him any more money.”

Although no one would complain from getting a hefty salary of $25.9 million for two years, it’s lower than the much hyped-up $126 million many were speculating.
