'Ghost In The Shell' Movie Adaptation Will Star Scarlett Johansson As Motoko Kusanagi? Masamune Shirow's Manga Offers $10 Million To 'Avengers' Star?

Masumune Shirow's "Ghost in the Shell" is finally having a movie adaptation spearheaded by DreamWorks Animation.

While the project is still in its early stages, reports from Screen Rant suggest that the giant studio company have offered a huge amount of money to "Avengers" star Scarlett Johansson to star in the movie.

Reportedly, DreamWorks was first eyeing on "The Wolf of Wall Street" star Margot Robbie to play Major Motoko Kusanagi - the main lead character in the movie adaptation - however, the film's producers and the actress did not work things out thus, they are now asking Johansson to play the heroine for $10 million according to Deadline.

The 30-year-old new mom is famous for her "Black Widow" role in Marvel superhero movies like "Avengers," "Iron Man" and "Captain America," thus it's no surprise if she's wanted in the upcoming "Ghost in the Shell" movie adaptation.

Masamune Shirow's "Ghost in the Shell" live action movie adaptation is reportedly going to be based on the manga original series taking place in 2029 where humans are embedded with a cybernetic parts inside their brains. It follows the story of human cyborg named Major Motoko Kusanagi whose duty is to protect the people from the criminal hackers.

"Ghost in the Shell" manga has already proven its popularity when it was first adapted into two anime films in Japan released in 1995 and 2004 titled "Ghost in the Shell" and "Innocence." The manga also had its own video games and TV series where a direct-to-home video movie titled "Ghost in the Shell: Arise" became an instant hit.

The upcoming live action movie of DreamWorks is the first adaptation of the manga in the West. It is also the first adaptation based on Masamune Shirow's "Ghost in the Shell" series.

The film is expected to start production next year with "Snow White and the Huntsman" director Rupert Sanders and "The Reluctant Fundamentalist" scribe William Wheeler on board to helm and pen the film.
