Christmas Day Is A Good Day For ‘The Interview,' Most-Streamed Video On YouTube And Made $1 Million On Limited Theater Release

Christmas was indeed a good day for the controversial film “The Interview," making it the most streamed movie for Dec. 25.

Earlier, The Guardian reported that Sony Pictures is looking at several options to let the public finally see the movie.

In last week’s interview with the CNN, Michael Lynton was quoted saying that there looking into ways or platforms to release the controversial film.

“We would still like the public to see this movie, absolutely. There are a number of options open to us. And we have considered those, and are considering them.” In response to whether it might be through YouTube, he added, “That’s certainly an option and certainly one thing we will consider.”

Sony Pictures have previously decided to cancel the release of the "The Interview," which according to reports ensued the cyber attack. The film, which revolves around the assassination of North Korea’s leader.

As promised, Sony released the movie digitally on Wednesday with limited theater release as well on Christmas Day. Money.CNN reported that “The Interview" was also available for streaming on Google Play, Microsoft's Xbox and a special website set up by Sony.

Reuters meanwhile reported that Google did think of the security implications it might get from deciding to stream the movie. "Given everything that’s happened, the security implications were very much at the front of our minds," Google's Chief Legal Officer David Drummond was quoted as writing in a blog post. "But after discussing all the issues, Sony and Google agreed that we could not sit on the sidelines and allow a handful of people to determine the limits of free speech in another country (however silly the content might be)."

In theatrical release, Vox reportedly earned over $1 million in just one day, Dec. 25. Given its limited release, it is expected to make at least $3 million over the weekend.

The Sony hacking was so massive that several reports have already come out regarding leaked information through the hacking based on the studio’s executive emails. There were also leaked films online from Sony Pictures prior to the decision to release the film.
