Facebook’s Year In Review A Failure? Criticized And Called A 'Cruel' Feature

Facebook's Year In Review is not as successful as they want it to be.

Several reports on the Year in Review are unflattering with some dubbing it as "inadvertent algorithmic cruelty."

It also annoyed some users because instead of giving them a choice of opting in, the only choice was to opt out.

A Mashable article described Facebook's algorithm in choosing photos "wasn't very thoughtful, dishing out good memories along with the bad."

Stuff.co.nz quoted Eric Meyer, a web designer, about Facebook's seeming insensitivity, opening old wounds. Meyers talked about his grief over seeing a photo of his deceased daughter on the Year in Review.

"I didn't go looking for grief this afternoon, but it found me anyway, and I have designers and programmers to thank for it," Meyers was quoted as saying.

He added, "through different fun-and-fabulous backgrounds, as if celebrating a death, and there is no obvious way to stop it".

The Year in Review although some users do use it, is kept hounded by the annoying feature.

The Stuff.co.nz article also quoted Curtin University media lecturer Tama Leaver said that Facebook could have used a more sensitive approach.

The lapse in judgment could be making Facebook less popular nowadays.

Earlier Facebook, touted the most popular social media platform in the world is decreasing hold on the teenagers.

Citing the result of a recent report by strategy Lab users, from 13 years old to 17 years old are on a decline.

"The percentage of teens ages 13 to 17 who use Facebook in the United States fell to 88 percent this year, that number revealed a drop from 94 percent in 2013 and 95 percent in 2012," according to the article.

The report also noted that Facebook has also suffered a dip in other age groups, with an overall decline of users to 90 percent.

Last year Facebook Chief Financial Officer David Ebersman said that daily Facebook use among younger teens dropped from the second to the third quarter.
