Constantine Moves To New Time Slot ON NBC, Check Out Interview With Star Matt Ryan [VIDEO]

The latest news from the show is that it will now be airing earlier on Friday night when it returns. Comicbook.com reports, "When Constantine returns in January, the embattled NBC series based on the long-running Vertigo series Hellblazer will no longer air at 10 p.m. on Friday nights, moving back instead to 8 p.m. ET/PT.

The move was announced via Twitter.

Constantine, which failed to get a back nine order but is still reportedly a candidate for a second-season renewal at NBC, had been airing after episodes of Grimm, NBC's hit supernatural drama and seemingly a logical companion piece. The pair will stay together, but now it will be Constantine that will provide a lead-in for Grimm, which will remain in place at 9 p.m.

The season will resume on January 16, 2015, and while the 8 p.m. move is likely seen by the network as a much more prime location for a show whose ratings have been on the upswing but still never been quite where NBC wanted, some fans have already chimed in to worry that an earlier time will necessarily mean a toned-down series...just as the show was beginning to generate a lot of enthusiasm from a fan base who had worried about just that early on."

Science Fiction.com reports, "Moving the show to the 8 o'clock slot shows some confidence on the part of the network, although it might also be a last ditch effort to see if fans will really show up to support the show. With only 5 episodes remaining, it could also just be airing to burn off the episodes and keep the slot warm until NBC gets another show ready for the Spring season. Only time will tell, but the good news is that although production on the first season was stopped at only 13 episodes, NBC has still not officially canceled the show, and with its rating upswing, there is a good chance we might still see a 'Constantine' Season 2."

Matt Ryan recently did an interview with The Mirror, "This is a different kind of genre of comic book show, that's what makes it unique. Constantine's not a superhero, he's a working class anti-hero, he's a man's man."

"The early comic books were political as well, and that sets it apart. The fact that he's got this twisted, tormented soul and sticks his middle finger up at the devil and has this cynical sarcasm, that's what makes it different - he's a real anti-hero."

"In terms of the audience as well, The Flash and Arrow have a different kind of audience to what we're going for. Hopefully there is a big enough audience for the show to continue."

There is also a new promo trailer for the midseason return, which you can watch below.

If you missed Episode 8, the synopsis for "The Saint of Last Resort," reads, "A call from Anne Marie (guest star Claire van der Boom), a member of the fateful Newcastle crew, sends John (Matt Ryan) and Chas (Charles Halford) to Mexico City and brings them closer to the source of The Rising Darkness. Meanwhile, Zed's (Angélica Celaya) past comes back to haunt her." You can watch the promo trailer below.

There is no announced synopsis or title for episode 9, but there is a promo trialer covering the final four episodes of season one, which you can watch below.

The latest news from the show is that NBC has halted production and capped the first season at 13 episodes. While this usually means that a network is cancelling a show, this is not the case for Constantine. Deadline reports, "NBC had to make a decision whether to keep Constantine in continuous production with little ratings information. While the series began production on a standard fall premiere production schedule, its launch was delayed until late October when NBC's Friday genre block usually debuts, so the network had to make a call whether to order additional episodes after only four episodes had aired vs. at least seven, which is the norm for freshman series."

"Based on the wildly popular comic book series "Hellblazer" from DC Comics, seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult John Constantine (Matt Ryan, "Criminal Minds") specializes in giving hell... hell. Armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and his wickedly naughty wit, he fights the good fight - or at least he did. With his soul already damned to hell, he's decided to leave his do-gooder life behind, but when demons target Liv (Lucy Griffiths, "True Blood"), the daughter of one of Constantine's oldest friends, he's reluctantly thrust back into the fray - and he'll do whatever it takes to save her."

Eonline saw the pilort and reports, "thank goodness NBC found Welsh actor Ryan. In the pilot alone, he managed to infuse the fan-favorite character with the right balance of confidence and bravado mixed with self-loathing and grief that make up who the complicated character is.

With a the current renaissance of supernatural horror and drama series on network and cable TV, Goyer spoke about what sets Constantine apart. "I've said John Constantine is one of the great characters of modern literature. He's unique, he's very funny, he's a bastard," Goyer said. "You know we joke that if he can solve a problem with a spell, he'll do it; if he can't solve it with a spell, he'll try a con; if he can't do it with a con he'll kick someone in the balls. He's just a unique character that people are going to fall in love with."

There have been some issues in that they can't show Constatine smoking onscreen, which some have taken to mean the character is not a smoker at all "We never said he wasn't smoking; we never said that. Far from it," Goyer clarified. "We have said, emphatically, that he's a smoker on the show."

Cerone said the creators are "limited by the FCC" as to what they're able to show, but "he carries cigarettes on the show, he lights up, he stubs out. And we play with it, too. We have one scene where he goes to light a cigarette and it starts raining."

Welsh actor Matt Ryan, who plays John Constantine, said "I feel like the fact that he's a tormented soul that's harboring so much guilt, and counteracts that with this cynical look on the world and humor; that juxtaposition of someone with so much shit going on inside them that they seem irreverent to it, and it's buried so deep inside them that they come across as if they don't give a shit," he said. "But actually he's a humanist at heart."

Ryan wen on to say "We decided we couldn't do a full-on Liverpudlian accent because it would be a bit strong for television," he said. "So we made it a bit more general northern. It's not my accent, as such. It's very similar, it's quite close, but there are certain vowel sounds that are different. We wanted him to be from Liverpool but traveled."

EW has released a new behind the scenes video which you can watch here.

Constantine retruns to NBC Friday, January 8th. Check back often for more information as it becomes available.
