Oklahoma Bill Could Make Wearing Hoodies A Crime, Violation Of Proposed Law Punishable By A Fine Of $500 [PHOTO]

In Oklahoma, wearing a hoodie could soon make you a criminal. According to Think Progress, Oklahoma lawmakers plan to introduce a bill this February that would make it a misdemeanor to "wear a mask, hood, or covering" either while committing a crime or in order to intentionally conceal one's identity.

The bill itself is meant to deter crime. Its author, Republican Senator Don Barring, stated, "The intent of Senate Bill 13 is to make businesses and public places safer by ensuring that people cannot conceal their identities for the purpose of crime or harassment... Similar language has been in Oklahoma statutes for decades and numerous other states have similar laws in place."

He continued, "Oklahoma businesses want state leaders to be responsive to their safety concerns, and this is one way we can provide protection."

Barring is set to introduce the bill, and he has also stated that wearing a hoodie could make offenders subject to a fine of $50 to $500, and up to one year in jail. Furthermore, it would not matter whether or not the offender is involved in a crime.

The Huffington Post reports that the bill's language includes exemptions for religious garments, weather protection, safety or medical purposes, parades, Halloween celebrations, and masquerade parties.

However, many citizens are worried that the bill's language is overly broad, and others think the bill unfair. Oklahoma City attorney James Siderias said, "I think this is a violation of an individual's right to chose what they want to wear as long as it doesn't violate the realm of public decency and moral values, and I think this could be very problematic," voicing his concern for personal freedom.

And what if you just don't want the public all up in your face? Concerned citizen Tracy Wehagen said, "They might have personal issues for keeping them on; they might have a bad hair day or maybe they have cancer or they're losing their hair. You just don't know why," suggesting that people should have the right to hide their heads if they want to.

What do you think of this new proposed bill?
