'Shut Up Family' Receives Possible Warning from KCSC

KBS Sitcom "Shut Up Family" received a warning from the Korea Communications Standards Commission.

According to the KCSC, the title of the drama may be suggestive and too vulgar for children and teenagers and influence their speaking negatively and warned the network. They said that they took into consideration the proper usage of Korean, testimony from the production and the court's decision on whether the title was allowed.

They explained that it was also against one of the provisions in the law governing public television networks.

A KCSC exec said, "If a show receives the warning, they must tell the viewers with a disclaimer before the airing of the episode."

This became an issue back in September when an anonymous viewer said that the "Shut Up" part was inappropriate for public television and requested that they be forbidden to use the word in the title.

KBS said that the "Shut Up" part can actually be interpreted as a different phrase which means the timing is now. They said that if you explain the title, it means 'arriving at the creation of a family.'"

However, the courts agreed with the KCSC and decided to issue the warning to the drama. However, because the case was originally brought forward by a regular citizen, they are not allowed to bring a case against an entire network and it does not actually involve any sort of defamation so they decided to rescind the case.
