King Abdullah II Retaliates After Jordanian Pilot's Execution, Targets ISIS With Airstrikes [PHOTO]

King Abdullah II of Jordan has recently promised to wage a "harsh" war against Islamic State militants after the abduction and killing of Jordanian pilot Muath al-Kaseasbeh. According to the New York Post, Jordanian fighter jets have carried out new airstrikes on ISIS territory, but the exact location targeted has not been divulged.

Kasaesbeh was captured in December when his F-16 warplane crashed over northeastern Syria, and Jordan was prepared to offer a prisoner exchange for his safe return. However, the deal did not come to pass.

Haaretz reports that Jordan's military reaction and state of revulsion follows the release of footage purported to show Kasaesbeh being burnt alive in a cage. Jordan felt particularly betrayed, as it was later found that he had been dead for several weeks before the prisoner exchange would have taken place.

Upon seeing the footage, Jordan hanged two Iraqi jihadists, one of whom was female. Both prisoners had already been sentenced to death.

State television quoted government spokesman Mohammad al-Momani   saying, "We are waging this war to protect our faith, our values, and human principles, and our war for their sake will be relentless and will hit them in their own ground. We are talking about a collaborative effort between coalition members to intensify efforts to stop extremism and terrorism to undermine, degrade and eventually finish [ISIS]."

He continued, "All the State's military and security agencies are developing their options. Jordan's response will be heard by the world at large but this response on the security and military level will be announced at the appropriate time."

TIME reports that actions taken by Jordanian forces could lead to more action against ISIS overall. This stems from the fact that Jordan is one of the U.S.'s closest allies in the Arab world, and now more than ever plays a vital role in the U.S.-led fight against ISIS.
