Sam Smith Supports Gay Marriage With 'Lay Me Down' Music Video Despite Split From Boyfriend Jonathan Zeizel

Sam Smith supports gay marriage, even if his marriage-to-be will not be with former boyfriend Jonathan Zeizel.

Today, the British gospel singer unveiled his music video for "Lay Me Down," a track off of his hit record "In the Lonely Hour." During an interview with Rolling Stone, Smith spoke on the controversy surrounding the music video, due to the depiction of a gay marriage culminating in a church.

"Obviously gay marriage isn't legal in churches, and we're doing a gay marriage today, in the church," said Smith.

"We're the first ever to do it. It's obviously not a real marriage, but still. The priest just said to us, 'We're going against the rules by doing this today,' which I thought was a lovely element in the video.

"Going to the church today, it's like, 'This is the first time we've let people with big noses in.' That's the equivalent to me," Smith added. "I'm walking in, I'm going, 'Why? Why are a man and a man not allowed to get married in this room?' Because it's the most natural thing."

Upon the video's release, Smith repeated his support of gay marriage on Facebook.

"This video shows my dreams that one day gay men and women and transgendered men and women all over the world, like all our straight families and friends, will be able to get married under any roof, in any city, in any town, in any village, in any country," wrote the 22-year-old.

On Jan. 20, the young singer posted a sad message on his Instagram and also gave a speech alluding to the alleged split with boyfriend Jonathan Zeizel during his concert in Toronto.

"The day before I wrote this song, I basically went on my phone and I deleted their number and I deleted everything," said Smith regarding a new song called "Good Thing."

Reportedly, Sam Smith also confirmed that he's now single but hope to be able to "find someone soon."
