NYC Man Drowns In Frozen Pond While Rescuing Dog, Pet Survives

Police say a 34-year-old man from Brooklyn drowned while trying to rescue his dog from a frozen pond.

AP reports that the Ontario County Sheriff's Office said Garvin Brown and his fiancee were renting a home in the Finger Lakes town of Naples, 40 miles southeast of Rochester.

Brown went for a walk with his dog around 1 a.m. Sunday when his pet went onto the ice of a pond and fell into the water.

According to News 8 WROC Rochester, Brown ran inside to tell his fiancee what happened before rushing back out to attempt to rescue the dog. But the thin ice couldn't support Brown's weight and he fell in as well. Investigators say Brown was unable to get out of the cold water and drowned.

He was found dead by investigators shortly thereafter.

Deputies say the dog survived.

Bill Gallagher, Lieutenant of the Ontario County Sheriff's Department, told the news station that calls for people and animals falling through the ice are common this time of year.

"Civilians shouldn't try this... stay off the ice," he said. "The other problem is that the water is so cold now, when you go into this water in this type of weather your chances of survival are very slim."
