K-Pop Double Take: Minah Of Girl's Day Lets Her Emotions Shine Through On The Funky Solo Single 'I Am A Woman Too' [VIDEO]

K-Pop Double Take is a weekly review column highlighting recent releases that have yet to receive the attention we feel they deserve.

Though its music video has received over 2 million YouTube views since being released on March 16, the new single "I Am A Woman Too" from singer Bang Minah of the South Korean girl group Girl's Day has received next to no press in the U.S. up to this point.

This is both surprising and unfortunate, considering that the song is both firmly rooted in Western dance music idioms (most prominently those of the funkified 1970s) and that Minah's earnest performance has enough emotion poured into it to hit you right in the chest, whether you understand her words or not.

There are some great live musical performances on "I Am A Woman Too." Highlights include a spot-on live drum track and an electric piano performance strongly steeped in the early days of jazz fusion.

By opting for living, breathing musicians as opposed to the endless layers of samples and sequenced drum loops so common in modern pop, Minah is afforded the luxury of a band reacting every step of the way to her artfully restrained vocal performance.

One interesting aspect of the Girl's Day singer's voice is how it points more to classic pre-teen male vocalists like Bobby Brown when he sang for New Edition as a teen or Michael in his Jackson 5 days, than the more standard diva influences.

Whether conscious or not, this quality gives Minah yet another original aspect to her sound. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what it is about he vocals on "I Am A Woman Too" that makes her reminiscent of these pubescent voices.

But for my money, it's the longing and the sheer power of a performer who knows when it is the time to lay everything on the line and deliver the vocal take of their life.
