K-Pop Crossover: South Korean Vocalist Yoon Mi Rae Compared To Lauryn Hill Of The Fugees

Is Yoon Mi Rae the Korean Lauryn Hill? The France magazine Liberation apparently thinks so.

The comparison was drawn between Yoon and the former Fugees member in this month's issue of the magazine, published on April 3,

“Yoon Mi Rae, otherwise known as T or Tasha can be compared to Lauryn Hill,” wrote Liberation's Seoul correspondent Eva John. “She is currently promoting with her group project MFBTY with Tiger JK and Bizzy.”

This can't be a bad thing for Yoon, considering Hill's legacy. The trailblazing rapper-vocalist-songwriter became the first woman ever to win five Grammy awards in one evening for her first solo album "The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill."

Yet, South Korea's would-be Fugee was quick to downplay her own rhyming ability.

“I don’t think I am the best as there are so many other great rappers," Yoon said. "It’s just that we haven’t had the chance to listen to their music yet.”

She believes that hip-hop is a the trend right now and that in order to create a more diverse style of hip-hop, we need a bigger underground scene.

MFBTY has recently released their first album, “Wondaland,” last month and ranked eighth on the Billboard World Albums Chart.

MFBTY performed for the first time in France back in June at the music festival Marché International du Disque et de l'Edition Musicale or "MIDEM."
