'Death Note' Live-Action In The Works; Acquires 'You're Next' Director Adam Wingard

Popular Japanese comic book series "Death Note" is getting a live-action adaptation from Warner Bros.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project has signed Adam Wingard to direct.His credits include the "V/H/S" series and "The ABC's of Death. He will also direct "The Woods," an upcoming horror film from Lionsgate Pictures.

Roy Lee (The Grudge, The Ring), Masi Oka (actor from Heroes), Dan Lin and Jason Hoffs (Edge of Tomorrow) are on board as producers. The script is written by Jeremy Slater (The Lazarus Effect, Fantastic Four).

"Death Note" was released in Japan as a manga comic in the early 2000. It was written by Tsunami Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, and follows main character Light Yagami, a teenager who comes comes across a mysterious notebook that allows you to bring death to anyone by writing down their names in it.

Another Japanese comic book getting a Hollywood adaptation cult-classic "Ghost In The Shell." The live-action version will star "Avengers: Age of Ultron" actress Scarlett Johansson as the main character.

The actress confirmed that the project will start production in February of next year:

"It's happening," she told Collider.  It will be shooting the beginning of next year, so I think we start production January or February and it's me and Rupert [Sanders]; and that's all I know." 

"Ghost In The Shell" was originally a Japanese manga that was first published in 1989 by creator Masamune Shirow. The title was popularized by an animated feature of the same name in 1995. The plot follows Major Motoko Kusanagi and her team of assault operatives known collectively as "Section 9," and their battles against cybercrime in a futuristic Japan.

"Death Note" has no official release date yet. "Ghost In The Shell" arrives in theaters on Apr. 14, 2017.
