Family Smokes on Plane and Gets Arrested for Causing 'A Bit of A Commotion'

A family smokes on plane and gets arrested for causing "a bit of a commotion." The family of three refused to stop smoking on a plane headed to the Dominican Republic on Friday. Therefore the plane was forced to land in Bermuda to remove and arrest the passengers from the aircraft.

"It appeared to be a father, a mother and a son. The parents appear to be in their 50s. The son, I believe, is around 22 or so," said acting Insp. Paul Simons.

The wife of Dave Shellington was also on the place.

She texted her husband saying: "They were smoking in the plane's washroom and when they came out they got into a little bit of an argument with the attendants."

"They couldn't say where they put their cigarette butts and that caused a bit of a commotion, I guess. From there it kind of escalated with the father, the mother and the son," Shellington's wife said, adding that there was a lot of swearing and screaming.

Simons said he could not determine the family's nationality for certain. He also mentioned he was not sure if they had been drinking. However, they were co-operative when escorted off the plan by police.

The family has been released after being taken to the police station. However, their passports and travel documents were seized.

The flight to the Dominican Republic was delayed and the crew and passengers were housed in hotels for the night and was rescheduled to leave on that Saturday.
