K-Pop Mixtape: Great Songs For Learning Korean

Listening to K-pop is hardly the best or easiest way for serious language students to go about mastering the language. But many people's interest in Korean was sparked by K-pop or K-dramas, so it's a natural gateway into learning the current way of speaking (or singing) the language. It also adds a little fun to lessons and gives students an invaluable glimpse into the country's culture and entertainment scene, which is crucial for any language learner.

So what are the best songs to sing along to for a helping hand in Korean language learning? Here are a few:

Big Bang, 'Fantastic Baby'

Not only are the lyrics in Fantastic Baby relatively well pronounced, but Big Bang also uses a few Korean phrases that don't translate literally into other languages but are popular in Korean conversations - for instance, a Korean phrase that translates into something like 'from one to 10,' really means more like 'from start to finish' in colloquial Korean phrase.

Super Junior, 'This Is Love'

This is a good mix of English and Korean, and the catchy beat makes it easy to memorize big chunks of lyrics for a great language lesson.

miss A, 'I Don't Need a Man'

Besides being a great dance break during a boring language lesson, miss A's song is full of little words and phrases (for instance, 'chincha,' meaning 'really?') that will improve your conversational Korean tremendously.

Roy Kim, 'Bom Bom Bom'

This one is fun because it is pleasant listening and has simple, easy-to-follow lyrics. It's a good song to listen to while following a printed sheet of both sets of lyrics.

f(x), 'Electric Shock'

For such an upbeat song, the lyrics in this f(x) hit are surprisingly chill and easy to decipher. It also has a fairly methodical, almost robotic beat, so it's another good one for learners that do well with memorization and repetition.
