VIXX Discuss The Process (And Fans) Behind Their Music [EXCLUSIVE]

VIXX (which stands for Voice, Visual, Value in Excelsis) is a six-member male pop group from South Korea, but their music and influence is quickly spreading to other parts of the world.

Consisting of leader N, main vocalists Leo and Ken, rapper Ravi and singers Hongbin and Hyuk, the group gained popularity as a concept or performance group, with intriguing themes such as vampires and voodoo dolls that extend to their music, lyrics, choreography, outfits and live performances. VIXX's powerful and charismatic performances, coupled with strong vocals, create their unique, fascinating appeal.

As part of their 2015 world tour, VIXX Live Fantasia Utopia, VIXX visited Singapore for the first time to perform for fans in the island city-state. KpopStarz caught up with the group for a short Q&A at the Crowne Plaza Changi Hotel the day before their May 29 concert.

Five members were present, main vocalist Ken could not attend due to a prior commitment in South Korea.

KpopStarz: Since VIXX was created through the reality program 'MyDOL,' you are essentially a K-Pop group created by the fans, for the fans. Can you tell us your unique relationship with your band's followers, both in Korea and beyond?

N: I believe there is going to be an ordering between fans and VIXX themselves. They know we are staying in certain areas, and fans will keep it up and support us in whatever we are trying to do. We believe that.

KpopStarz: With your growing popularity around the world and recent debut in Japan, the group must have a pretty hectic schedule. How do you avoid burning out? What do you do to unwind? How do you keep your energy up?

N: How we release our stress? Since we can visit lots of countries for our performances, we go swimming, to gymnasiums and eat delicacies from different countries. That's how we release our stress.

KpopStarz: Ravi and Leo, you both have been involved in songwriting for the group. Where do you find your inspiration and what is your creative process like? Please describe how you take a song from a rough sketch, present it to the band and then perform it in the studio.

Ravi: Inspiration has come from everywhere, not only from a specific point. Usually we get it from musical areas. When composing a song, we will keep in mind that it is for VIXX and it's taking care of the characteristics of each member. So it's not really a challenge for me to understand the concept of the song.

KpopStarz: For N, you're always on the TV shows, then you act in the dramas, appear on many variety shows and have hosted many music programs. So, what are the different challenges in all these appearances compared to performing music? Do you see yourself eventually getting involved in movies or stage musicals?

N: Definitely I would like to expand my career in movie and musical areas as well. But since I feel the absence of my members around me when I go for my individual schedules, that is the part I find it a bit of strange, to work as an individual. In the future, I would like to work harder and maintain a better situation to perform better for the audience and fans.

At the end of the brief interview, N said "Xie Xie" which means "Thank you," in Chinese. Hongbin also showed off his Mandarin prowess by saying a more complex phrase, "Da Jia Xin Ku Le," meaning, "Everyone has worked hard" and shows appreciation for everyone's time and effort.
