5 Biggest Surprises From KCON 2015 In Los Angeles

North America's largest K-pop convention, KCON 2015, was held from July 31 to August 2 in sunny Los Angeles, California where tens of thousands of fans flocked to celebrate all things Hallyu. Here are five ways the event managed to blow their minds.

1. They added an extra day - bringing the convention to a 3-day event for the first time

2015 was the first year KCON expanded to offer three days of All Things Hallyu. Though there was no star-studded concert to attend the first day, fans could attend a half day of convention activities, held in the Los Angeles Convention Center West Hall.

With over 100 vendors, sponsors, exhibitors and fan clubs in attendance, and an additional 100+ panels, programs, screenings, engagements and workshops scheduled, there was something to see, taste, touch and experience for everyone, from newbies to veterans.

2. KCON L.A. moved to the Los Angeles Convention Center and Staples Center

Housing the convention and the M! Countdown concert in different venues necessitated separate ticketing for the two events, which initially created some confusion among prospective attendees. However, ultimately this situation increased the flexibility for visitors overall. It gave people the freedom to experience KCON without having to purchase an expensive concert ticket.

This was a win for fans who may have not been interested in this year's concert line-up, or who were more interested in the other aspects of Hallyu, such as film, tv, beauty, technology and food, to name a few. Attendees also had the choice to purchase one-day convention passes, making attending KCON 2015 in Los Angeles an even more flexible bargain.

3. The KCON 2015 App debuted

Amidst such an overwhelming plethora of attractions and events at KCON, there was a new way to stay up-to-date on KCON news and announcements, as well as to plan the ultimate KCON experience. This year, KCON released a companion app on Android and iOS, which contained much of the information contained in the convention booklet, including the schedule of events and bios of featured guests.

Most importantly, it provided a way for attendees to make their own schedule and even set an alert to indicate when the events in your personalized schedule would begin. It ran smoothly throughout the length of the convention and was a much-welcome addition to this year's con.

4. Hollywood and Hallyu, onscreen and off

Daniel Henney is a Korean-American actor, on the rise in the Hollywood scene. Henney voiced Tadashi, older brother of Hiro, the main protagonist in the 2014 Disney film, Big Hero 6, the highest-grossing animated film of that year. But K-drama fans first knew him as Henry, the second male lead in 2005 K-drama, My Name Is Kim Sam-soon, starring Kim Sun Ah and Hyun Bin.

In conjunction with KOCCA (Korea Creative Content Agency), KCON presented "All That K-Drama with KOCCA: A Conversation with Jin Hyuk, Director of Doctor Stranger and Master's Sun, as well as "All That K-Drama with KOCCA: A Conversation with Ji Eun Park, Writer of My Love from the Stars and The Producers. Master's Sun and My Love From The Stars are both in the works to be adapted for American television.

KPopStarz also ran into Hollywood film director and screenwriter, Jon M. Chu, at the M Countdown concert on Saturday night. Chu is known for directing several of the Step Up films franchise, the Justin Bieber film, Never Say Never, and GI Joe: Retaliation, of which Hallyu actor, Lee Byung Hun, was one of its stars. Chatting with him after the concert, he mentioned his recent visit to Korea and his meeting with Psy. He had been invited to the concert by CJ and had come to see Super Junior perform, as well as to check out the crowd. He admitted to never having met Super Junior, but maybe now, ELFs could hope for a Super Show concert film directed by this luminary?

As the largest Hallyu convention in North America, KCON continues to be a leader in showcasing the potential of crossover that exists in Hollywood and Hallyu.
