Icy River Teen Body Recovered: Sister Dies Trying To Save Brother From South Dakota River, Body of Man Still Missing

The rescue crews recovered the body of teen girl on Friday, a day after she jumped into an icy river to rescue her young brother in South Dakota.

The 16-year-old girl, Madison Leigh Wallace willing jumped into an icy river in an attempt to save her 6-yer-old brother.

The boy, Garrett Wallace was pulled ashore, returned to safety and is with family members.

Police say she drowned after she was dragged away by fasting-moving, water in Sioux Falls. Crews are still searching for Lyle Eagletail, 28, who also jumped into help but then disappeared in the freezing water.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue Chief Jim Sideras said the recovery crews are still battling the elements, which are not cooperating in their effort to find the missing.

The search has been mainly near the Pedestrian Bridge by the Falls Overlook Café.

"That's where we're bordered in at and that's where we are confident that we'll find them," said Sideras.

"Everybody here has their eyes on water. Looking for something as small as a knee, patch of clothing," Sideras said

"Our prayers are with them, we want to help them cope as best they can," he said.

The search hasn't been easy as the current is creating a runoff or foam that is 10 feet deep in some areas, which they have to water down to even see the ice.

"The problem is we had to break up a lot of this ice, and the ice is creating a lot of problems for us, so we had to bring in some special equipment to break up the ice," says Sideras.

Teenager was a sophomore at Vermillion High School and with such tragedies the school officials are providing students with guidance and grief counselors to meet with students grieving the drowning death of a classmate.
