The Nintendo NX Console Will Use Cartridges, Not Discs: Release Date And Specs Rumors

The highly-anticipated Nintendo NX gaming console is reported to use memory card-style cartridges rather than optical discs.

A detailed explanation of the patent layouts for the console, shared via NeoGAF, explains that "example system is not provided with an optical disk drive." The leaked information also mentioned that Nintendo filed a patent application for the console on Feb. 10, adding that the controller includes a digital display screen.

The Nintendo NX is also reported to include specs that support virtual reality and augmented reality.

California-based tech advisor Digi-Capital tells Forbes that Nintendo may try to be one of the first companies to make virtual reality more social---this could be accomplished by developing multiplayer capabilities or using augment reality.

Nintendo officials have yet to confirm specs and release date information pertaining to the console. However, new reports suggest that Nintendo may release its new NX console in late 2016, given that it is working on a deal with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) for its processor.

AMD produces gameplay chips that serve as processors for the Xbox One and Playstation 4consoles.

Nintendo's former president and chief executive officer Satoru Iwata recently passed away. He was 55 years old.
