NBA Trade Rumors: Zach LaVine's Development Means Kevin Martin Departure?

The Minnesota Timberwolves are poised for a great future as they have one of the best young talents in the league right now.

They have reigning rookie of the year Andrew Wiggins, 2015 NBA draft 1st overall pick Karl-Anthony Towns, explosive guard Zach LaVine among others. Not only that, but they have a good supporting cast of veteran players as well.

They are headed by future Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett, center Nikola Pekovic, point guard Ricky Rubio, and shooting guard Kevin Martin. However, the latter has been subject to some trade rumors recently as the T-Wolves are allegedly planning to give the keys to Zach LaVine at the shooting guard position.

In a report by Lang Greene of Basketball Insiders, the T-Wolves are actually not planning to part ways with Martin just yet, instead they will give majority of the minutes to LaVine and other young rookies to help their development.

"The decision to relegate Martin to a reserve role likely had less to do with LaVine being the better player at the moment and more to do with the Timberwolves' full investment in the development of their young core," Greene wrote.

He added that should LaVine be able to exceed expectations, that might be the time when the T-Wolves will finally pull the trigger. Martin has one of the more team friendly contracts in the league and at his age, he is still a very serviceable veteran around.

"If LaVine steps into the role and performs well, Martin becomes one of the Timberwolves' most attractive trade assets and incredibly expendable. Martin is owed $7.1 million this season and holds a player option worth $7.4 million for the 2016-17 campaign. Martin's deal is flexible enough to attract a solid number of suitors if he becomes available."
