K-Pop Review: 2013 Rookie Playlist

Like every year, there is a big hype for rookies. Let's take a look who is running for rookie of the year for 2013 so far.

Ladies' Code debuted with the song, 나쁜여자 (Bad Girl).
I'm surprised that I really enjoy this song. It has a jazzy flare with the cinematic instrumental integration. Much like Secret's idea of channeling the sounds of the 20's-50's.
Sure the girls are pretty and sexy, but their debut song made me attracted to them. The video wasn't strong enough  besides one scene (especially the ones with the guns).
The idea of not being the good girl anymore because the boyfriend is jerk is a plot that isn't new to me. I've seen it before. 2NE1 used giant explosions that will make sure that guy is gone, 4minute used pranks and gags to make sure that scum bag of a boyfriend learned his lesson, so on - so forth.

Not bad for a debut Ladies' Code.

GI ( abbreviation of 'Global Icon') debuted with the concept of consisting of  tomboy members with Beatles. Catching the attention of many netizens with their teaser and music video. When I watch the music video (Beatles), I felt kind of cheated in a sense as to when I saw the teaser.

All of them try too hard to push that they are tomboys to counter the current sexy and cute acts. The song reminds me of Hyuna (4Minute)'s Very Hot  with a back beat, auto-tune (too much) and vocals. I like the appeal that they try to pull off but I'm sorry girls- it didn't work for me.

Maybe when you guys make a comeback, I'll try to listen you guys again

Delight have the badass tough girl concept as well with Mega Yak. Which is a humorous thought with their group name. They as well attracted me by their teaser video and I got a good reaction to the song. Really has that party techno vibe, a bit too much screaming but if I put this against GI's Beatles, I put Delight's Mega Yak.

Now the debut song has two versions, one is just the girls and the other featuring P.O. of Block B. Many Block B fans can agree that Mega Yak has that Block B feel and aggression.

As for the video, I can't really talk much about it. Fancy cars, neon lights and partying. I can say the dancing does need a bit of work.

Overall, I quite enjoyed this debut.

I already talked about M4M on another post. so another male group that caught my attention is PURE. PURE debuted with a quintessential male K-Pop sound with, I Still Love You.

You thought their concept will be all white and bright as they sing with all their heart. Well, it's the opposite. For a debut, it's more monochromatic than expected of their name.

Their debut song really reminds me of other (big name) male groups such as, AA (Double A)'s Because I'm Crazy, BEAST's Fiction, DMTN's E.R., MBLAQ's Stay... you understand what I mean. They are very chic guys that have some kind of potential  in the industry, more likely as a underrated group with a small following.
The main dance move is impressive, it needs some more unification and sync though especially working with a prop.
Until Seventeen will finally debut, M4M and PURE are head to head with similar concepts and sound this year for rookies.

Like every year, it's anyone's game to win win rookie of the year. As they all promote on music shows, I wish them all good luck and make use of their first year.
If there are other groups that debuted or to be expected this year and caught your attention - comment below. Also your opinions on the groups mentioned - comment below.

Disclaimer: Apologies that I'm not including the other rookies that have (or will) debuted this year. The reason for choosing these specific rookies are based on personal attention.
