Psy Back In The Billboard Social 50 Top 10 Thanks To Today Show Appearance

Psy's latest release, "Gentleman," started out on an upswing, breaking two world records and accumulating millions of hits in only its first few days. After its initial popularity, however, the song took a mighty tumble in the charts.

But in the mist of his international promotional tour, Psy has crawled his way back up the US Billboard charts. Specifically, this past week the Korean rapper re-entered the Billboard Social 50 chart's top ten.

The Social 50 chart is different from the typical music rankings in that it follows a song's popularity on social media and ranks the top artists according to their presence on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, MySpace, and Instagram. The calculations include the number of new fans, friends, and followers as well as number of page views, streamed content and netizen reactions.

Due to his overwhelming popularity on across the internet, it would seem that Psy would routinely fall into the top spots. However, the Billboard Social 50 only factors in social media hits from the United States.

However, when the newest list was released on May 9, Psy had made an impressive jump from number 15 to number 6. The placement in the top 10 was undoubtedly spurred by Psy's appearance on the popular US morning news program, the Today Show on May 3. During his appearance Psy had the crowd in New York City's Rockefeller Center dancing along with both "Gentleman" and his old favorite "Gangnam Style."

In addition, Psy also had a rather hilarious interaction with host Matt Lauer where he instructed the awkward newsman in the ways of the 'arrogance dance.'

The Today Show bit resulted in a reported 203,000 conversations on Facebook according to Billboard and led to 147,000 new followers. All across social media people were sharing this video clip and their thoughts, thus helping Psy climb back into the top 10.

It will be interesting to see if Psy can remain in the Social 50's top ten again next week. This past week he was able to muster up many more conversations online regarding his guest lecture at Harvard University on May 9.
