It may sound gross and disgusting but it turns out that the "poop wine" featured in JTBC hit romcom "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon" is actually a real thing in Korea. The wine is actually made out of a combination of fermented human feces and rice wine.

According to a report by Drama Fever, an episode of "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon" showed Bong Soon's mother offering Boss Tak some wine to make up for the injuries he suffered from Bong Soon. Boss Tak seemed to be enjoying his drink, which he said had a nutty flavor and a clean finish and asked Bong Soon's mother what drink he just had. Boss Tak's reaction to the revelation was priceless and elicited a lot of laughs from the show's loyal fans.

While it seemed at first that the "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon" writers in injected a fictional poop wine drink to amp up the comedy, it seems that there may be some truth to the weird delicacy. And it seems that it has been around for ages.

According to a report from VICE, "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon's" poop wine is known as "Ttongsul", a medical drink made out of feces from human children and is known historically for treating wounds, broken bones and detoxify patients. The feces of children ages 4-7 years old are fermented and used for the drink because their feces don't smell.

To make the poop wine, the feces is fermented and later combined with rice wine and is produced with nine percent alcohol. According to Dr. Lee Chang Soo, the poop wine was developed for faster pain relief and long term, overall benefits.

Medical benefits or not, many of the comments left on the VICE's youtube page showed a lot of users who were unconvinced about its healing effects and poked fun at the concept of developing a drink from human waste. They also praised for the reporter doing the documentary for sampling the drink no matter how disgusting she thought it was. The "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon" team may have done the world a great service by letting the world know that poop wine exists.
