Recently, a press conference was held for the release of the new movie 'Memoirs of A Murderer' starring famous actor Seol Kyung Kyu. During the press conference interview, Seol Kyung Kyu made a shocking statement to the media by referring to Seolhyun as a 'baekchi' - the Korean equivalent to a dumb blonde.
The actor said, "She has a 'baekchi' beauty. It's good for actresses to be 'baekchi'. I think it will be memorable. I hope she does not lose her 'baekchi' beauty even when she's in her 30s and 40s." The actor was almost instantly bombarded with hate comments by not only fans of AOA but people who felt he was offending women by saying they should be like dumb blondes and enforcing a stereotype.
Although Seolhyun nor her agency have responded to the matter, the actor immediately regretted his actions and issued an apology to Seolhyun through the media. Seol Kyung Kyu apologized saying, "During yesterday's press conference, I sincerely apologize that I used a phrase that was not fitting. I wanted to say in a good way that she was innocent and like a piece of white drawing paper, but I used the wrong expression due to my lacking thoughts. I apologized to Seolhyun, and I will apologize again officially during a media interview. I will also, in the future, be more careful in the words I use.
