Bruno Mars' Mother Dies At 55 From Brain Aneurysm In Honolulu

Bernadette Hernandez, the mother of Grammy award-winning singer Bruno Mars, died of a brain aneurysm in Honolulu, Hawaii on Saturday. Hernandez was 55.

She died at Queens Medical Center. According to the Associated Press, no other information was given.

The Daily Maily reports that Hernandez suffered a serious heart attack on Friday, and was rushed to the hospital, where she was in critical condition.

Bruno Mars, 27, was born Peter Gene Hernandez in Hawaii, CNN reports. He began performing at the tender age of 4, in his family's show as an Elvis impersonator.

At that young age, Mars recorded a song he called "I Love You Mom," set in an 80s style-ballad in which he repeats the title and calls her "my favourite girl."

"My mommy helps me with my voice / cuz a superstar singer is my first choice," he sang.

Mars moved to Los Angeles as a young adult to being writing and producing for other artists. Just a few years ago, his debut album "Doo-Wops & Hooligans," which includes the song "Just The Way You Are," won him a Grammy for best male pop vocal performance in 2010.

The album and his hit single "Grenade" were nominated for three Grammys in 2011. His second album, "Unorthodox Jukebox," includes the songs "Locked Out of Heaven" and "When I Was Your Man."

Mars talked to Rolling Stone in their April issue about his childhood.

:I wouldn't trade it for anything," Bruno told the magazine, in reference to singing in his family's band. "Because I feel like I can enjoy this so much."

Mars was scheduled to resume touring on June 22. No word has been made as to whether his mother's death will impact his concert schedule.
