Korean-American R&B Hip-Hop Trio Aziatix: K-Pop Or World-Pop?

Recently there has been a lot of debate in the media as well as among fans as to what exactly constitutes 'K-Pop.' Is it ethnicity? Language? Or is it more complicated than all that?

R&B/hip-hop trio Aziatix present a very unique situation - three Korean-Americans who rap and sing in English and promote in Asia. How do they fit in to the genre of K-Pop?

At first it seems impossible to classify them as a K-Pop group - they are on a major American label (Cash Money Records) and while ethnically Korean, they perform in English.

But when the group was first created, the majority of their promotions were in South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, and in 2011 they were awarded the Best New Asian Artist Group award at the Mnet Asian Music Awards. Their songs have been seen on charts across Asia as well as in the US and their fans hail from as many countries as you can think of.

Aziatix really does have a unique position in the music world, and maybe not lumping them under the K-Pop heading is for the best.

In a recent interview with KpopStarz, the group was asked to give their two cents on K-Pop. The answers were just as expected - looking at the genre from an outsider's perspective while still identifying with it.

"K-Pop is definitely starting to go global," said Aziatix rapper Flowsik. "Artists such as Psy, Wonder Girls... and I think to create this wave, it's not just one artist that can do it. I think that there has to be a lot of artists making this big wave together."

He went on to stress that his group is also a part of the international K-Pop movement, "I think unity is very important and hopefully we'll be able to take it all the way with this."

His sentiments were reiterated by R&B vocalist Eddie Shin who added, "It's a testament for Psy's success to have that many people support him. It's like, oh you know what? Maybe people are ready for Asians coming into the mainstream US and everywhere."

"It's an exciting thing for us. We're really lucky to have this," he ended.

Currently focusing on their career with Cash Money Records, the guys are preparing to release their next album under the label and have been collaborating with other artists in the YMCMB family. But that does not mean they are forgetting their roots. To kick off promotions for their upcoming single and album they will be first promoting in Asia.

"We're going to first launch some release parties in Asia - Japan, Taiwan, Korea - pretty much all over the place," said Flowsik. "We're just going to be traveling and letting everybody know about this single and what we're planning on doing," he added.

As an Asian-American trio, it seems natural for things to start overseas, but that by no means pigeonholes them. "We're hopefully going to travel all around the world. We have fans everywhere," explained Nicky Lee.

It is not just the music they produce, but also the music that influenced their style, that is a blend of the East and the West.

"We grew up listening to both mainstream music in the States and in Asia as well," said Flowsik. "So I think our ears grew - as we grew, we had a chance to really get different styles of music. And I think that's what makes us very... I guess... unique?"

And that is exactly the point. It is hard to categorize Aziatix as K-Pop, just as it is hard to categorize them as any other genre - their music is the perfect blend of styles - a direct result of the members' individual influences and inspirations as well as their backgrounds as Korean Americans.

So maybe what it all comes down to is not language or appearance or location. K-Pop fans and media welcome Aziatix into the mix as a sort of breath of western air, and Cash Money Records obviously saw something pretty spectacular in them to sign the group and invite a little eastern flair to the label's offerings.

Whether Aziatix is the exception or the 'new' rule, they can easily find a place in pop music, be it 'K,' 'A' or otherwise.
