Esther Williams, Hollywood Star And Pool Champ, Dies at 91: Mermaid Gone Actress Swam Over 1,250 Miles While Shooting Movies

Esther Williams, dubbed "Hollywood's Mermaid," died on Thursday in Beverly Hills, Calif. at the age of 91, leaving behind an unprecedented record - the swimming champ swam over 1,250 miles while shooting movies, according to the New York Times.

The starlet was headlined in over 12 Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer musicals in the 1940s and 1950s, earning her reputation as a Hollywood star.

But Esther Williams was also known for her impressive swimming ability- she was able to breaststroke, backstroke, crawl and dog paddle all while smiling at the camera.

She was also slated to compete in the 1940 Summer Olympics, but wasn't able to after the competition was cancelled due to the United States' involvement in World War II and combating Nazi Germany.

Her talents went beyond the swimming pool.

While one of Ester Williams' most well-known movies was her 1944 film "Bathing Beauty," she was also known for her roles in "Easy to Wed," "Pagan Love Song," "On an Island with You," "Million Dollar Mermaid" and "Duchess of Idaho."

Most of her films incorporated her extraordinary swimming ability and highlighted her reputation as "Hollywood's Mermaid." She would also entertain her viewers with aquaballets and stylish swimming moves.

Ester Williams even had her own 90-foot, 20-foot deep pool that was built for her at Stage 30 on the MGM filming lot.

But she didn't just leave her talents in the studio's pool.

Ester Williams was heavily involved with the swimming community in Los Angeles, joining the city's Athletic Club in her adolescent years. She continued supporting the Los Angeles Athletic Club well beyond her regional swimming record days.
