K-pop Dance Steps That Were Changed for Being 'Inappropriate' [Updated 2024]

There are instances when K-pop dance moves are deemed inappropriate by the Korean Broadcasting System (or KBS) for different reasons. It's commonly due to being too sexy, but sometimes there are other reasons only artists would know.

Because of this, K-pop idols tend to change the choreography to be more fitting for young audiences.

Here are K-pop steps that were changed for being unsuitable for broadcast.

K-pop Dance Steps That Were Changed for Being 'Inappropriate'

BLACKPINK - 'Don't Know What to Do'

In the original choreography of BLACKPINK's "Don't Know What to Do," Lisa slowly spreads her legs wide apart.

Unfortunately, it was regarded as too sexy, so they had to change it. The final step shows the Thai idol simply kneeling on one knee.

OnlyOneOf - 'Libido'

At the time OnlyOneOf made their comeback with their new song "Libido," they immediately made headlines and became a subject of heated discussions online due to their explicit dance moves.

One part of the choreography has one of the members putting his hand in between the other members' legs, covering the genital area with his right hand. He then slides his hand down the thigh of his member.

Because of the heavy criticism they received, OnlyOneOf decided to alter it. The final step shows the member avoiding the genital area and touching the side of his member's thigh instead.

Sunmi - 'Tail'

A K-pop dance step in Sunmi's "Tail" choreography was also altered for being inappropriate.

The initial choreography of Sunmi's "Tail" involves the female soloist dancing on top of a male dancer who is sitting on a chair. Sunmi will then jump on the male dancer's thighs with her legs apart.

Because this part was too sexually suggestive, Sunmi ended up sitting on the chair (without the male dancer) and then placing one of her legs on the chair.

EXID - 'Up&Down'

This is arguably one of the most well-known instances of K-pop idols having asked to change something in the choreography. The hip thrusts that the EXID members execute in the chorus of "Up&Down" were deemed too sexy.

So. the girls changed it slightly to swaying their hips around or simply shaking their hips.

Rainbow - 'A'

Rainbow also had to change a part of their "A" choreography as it wasn't suitable for viewers of all ages. In the original dance, the members slowly lifted their shirts to show their slender figure.

So, in the new dance move, the girls just mimicked the movement without touching and lifting their shirts.

Girl's Day - 'Something'

"Something" is one of Girl's Day's iconic hits, but the choreography for the track was heavily criticized due to the "sensual" dance moves off the members on the floor. That part was then changed after their fourth live performance.

4L (four ladies) - 'Move'

As soon as the music video for 4L's "Move" came out, there was a controversy over the members' revealing outfits and their sexual dance steps. Therefore, 4L ultimately had to change their entire choreography.

Sunmi -  'Full Moon'

In "Full Moon's" original choreography, Sunmi spreads her legs while sitting on a couch. This daring move was banned by KBS for being too sexual.

To amend this, Sunmi would change the move to only opening her legs from the knees down. Still sensual, but nothing too scandalous!

AOA - 'Mini Skirt'

During "Mini Skirt," the girls of AOA are seen unzipping a zipper at the side of their dresses to expose their thighs. As they do this, they wiggle their hips.

Though an iconic dance move, it was considered too suggestive. In live performances, the girls are still seen wiggling their hips, but the part where they unzip their dress was taken out.

VIXX - 'Voodoo Doll'

In the original choreography for VIXX's "Voodoo Doll," the group makes use of a staff to mimic a stabbing motion. Originally, Ken pretends to stab himself in the stomach with the staff, piercing through him and N's body.

The move was considered too violent for live broadcasts. During performances, Ken would instant slam the staff on the ground, and N would raise his hand in a dramatic fashion.

STELLAR - 'Marionette'

Fans actually prefer the changed dance rather than the original move!

In STELLAR's "Marionette," the choreography features a "butt scratching" move, which fans considered awkward. Music broadcasts found the move too scandalous, and STELLAR changed the choreography to them resting their arms on their lower backs instead.
