Where is Ex-Super Junior Han Geng Now? Status of First Chinese K-pop Star

When Super Junior first made their debut back in November 2005, they were originally named Super Junior 05 and consisted of 12 members, which later increased to 13. But over the years, a total of three members left the group - one being Han Geng. More than a decade after leaving the group and their label SM Entertainment, what has Han Geng been up to now?

Han Geng's Activities Before Leaving Super Junior

As a member of Super Junior, Han Geng served as the group's lead dancer and sub vocalist. He promoted with the group since their debut in November 2005 when they released their first single "Twins (Knock Out)" from their debut album "Twins." In Korea, Han Geng also went by his Korean stage name Hankyung.

With Super Junior, Han Geng participated with the group for several releases, such as "Miracle," "U," "Dancing Out," "Don't Don," and "Marry U," among others. He was also part of the group's Chinese sub-unit Super Junior-M, where he served as the leader in 2008.

For the next couple of years, Han Geng promoted with Super Junior and Super Junior-M by releasing music and appearing on broadcasts.

Why Did Han Geng Leave Super Junior?

In December 2009, Han Geng filed to terminate his contract with SM Entertainment. His decision to end working under the label is due SM Entertainment's exclusive contract provisions for the Chinese K-pop idol, which Han Geng claims were unlawful, harsh, and goes against his rights.

Han Geng reportedly developed gastritis and a kidney disease after being refused a day off in over two years. He also claimed that the profit distribution was unfair.

With a legal battle between Han Geng and SM Entertainment taking place, Super Junior-M had to cancel all of their schedules activities and performances in both China and Taiwan, as well as their future activities.

As a result, the members of Super Junior-M returned to South Korea and began preparing for their fourth studio album. Despite the legal battle still ongoing, Han Geng remained in China where he signed under a new label for his promotions as a solo artist in the country. Not long after, he was able to release his debut solo album in July 2010.

After a year, the Seoul Central District Court had ruled in favor of Han Geng in December 2010. SM Entertainment immediately filed an appeal over the decision. But Han Geng and SM Entertainment reached a mutual agreement regarding the idol's contract, thus ending the legal battle in September 2011 and Han Geng leaving the label officially.

Han Geng's Activities After Leaving Super Junior

After leaving Super Junior, Han Geng focused on his budding solo career in China. He released several albums and singles through the years.

Han Geng also became an actor, and has built up an extensive filmography after starring in numerous films and dramas. Some of his works include "The First President," "Ex-Files," "Sweet Sixteen," "A Chinese Odyssey Part Three," "The Founding of an Army," "Dynasty Warriors," "Stage of Youth," and many more.

More recently, he is starring in the upcoming films "Silence of Smoke," "Knockout," and "Three Old Boys," as well as the upcoming dramas "Hard Memory," and "The Heritage."

Han Geng also launched his own custom phone brand called Geng Phone back in 2013. He also launched the eyewear brand Burqa Angel in 2014.
