8 K-pop Idols With Rare Surnames: Ong Seongwu, SEVENTEEN Seungkwan, More

As of 2021, there are around 85 million Koreans all over the world. Of those millions of people, the most common surnames are Kim (10.7 million), Lee (7.3 million), and Park (4.2 million). These three surnames make up somewhat half of the Korean population as of 2020, so it's no wonder many K-pop idols have these as their last name. Still, there are some artists with surnames that are so rare they are shared by not more than 35,000 Koreans worldwide.

Ong Seong Wu

Ong Seong Wu, a former member of WANNA ONE, now a soloist and an actor appearing in dramas and films, has a very rare surname. The surname "Ong" is the rarest last name on our list, as it is shared by only 967 Koreans.

BIGBANG Taeyang

Dong Young Bae, widely known by his stage name Taeyang, is a singer, songwriter, dancer, and a member of the popular South Korea boy group BIGBANG. He is also a K-pop idol with a rare surname. There are only 5,936 Koreans who use "Dong" as their last name. One of those Koreans is another K-pop idol, namely NCT Winwin whose Korean name is Dong Sasung (Chinese name: Dong Sicheng).

SEVENTEEN Seungkwan

Boo Seungkwan, one of the main vocalists of SEVENTEEN and an all-rounder entertainer, also carries a very rare surname. His surname, Boo, hails from the wonderful Jeju Island, and he shares it with 10,604 Koreans.

Golden Child Jaehyun

Golden Child Jaehyun's full name is Bong Jaehyun. He is a vocalist in the group, as well as a rising actor. His surname, Bong (and its other similar variations), is used by an estimated number of 12,959 Koreans.

BTOB Sungjae

BTOB Sungjae also joins our list of K-pop idols with rare surnames. He is a singer, songwriter, actor, host, and entertainer, and a very proud member of the boy group BTOB. He shares his surname, Yook, with 23,455 Koreans.

2PM Taecyeon

Next, we have Ok Taecyeon, who is 2PM's main rapper, a singer, a songwriter, and an entrepreneur. He carries a very unique surname of Ok. An estimated number of 25,107 Koreans share this last name.

DIA Huihyeon

A member of DIA, a singer-songwriter, rapper, and actress, Huihyeon also boasts a rare surname, which is Ki. This surname is carried by an estimated total of 29,062 Koreans.

BLOCK B PO

Rounding out our list is BLOCK B P.O, whose real name is Pyo Jihoon. He is a rapper, singer, actor, and the maknae of his group. He shares his unique surname, Pyo, with an estimated number of 30,749 Koreans.
