Space Jam Movie Re-Union In The NBA: Patrick Ewing Signs To Work For Michael Jordan as Associate Head Coach of Charlotte Bobcats

The "Space Jam" reunion is finally here. New York Knicks great Patrick Ewing is joining up with his old nemesis and Space Jam co-star, Michael Jordan to become an associate head coach with the Charlotte Bobcats, the team Jordan now owns.

Jordan and Ewing appeared together in the 1996 animated cult movie classic. Of greater consequences, Jordan and Ewing were longtime rivals as superstars for the Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks.

Ewing will coach under longtime friend and first-year head coach Steve Clifford. Ewing and Clifford have a strong professional and personal history together.

The Hall of Fame center did not coach this season. He coached as an assistant the previous eight seasons in Orlando and Houston.

Ewing interviewed for the Bobcats and Detroit Pistons head coaching jobs last summer and still has a desire to become a head coach, according to a league source.

Ewing turned down an offer from the Knicks last summer to coach their D-League team, the Erie BayHawks. A source close to Ewing said at the time that he felt disrespected by the offer.

Sacramento Kings coach Mike Malone also tried to hire Ewing for his coaching staff, according to yahoo.

Before sitting out the 2012-13 season, Ewing had worked eight seasons as an NBA assistant coach, including in Orlando (2008-12) and Houston (2003-08). Ewing was an assistant on each staff with Clifford.

Ewing interviewed for the Bobcats' head-coaching job in 2012, but ultimately Mike Dunlap was hired. Ewing also interviewed for the Detroit Pistons' head-coaching job in 2011.
