EXO Chen Talks on New EP, His Regrets & What Changed Him During Hiatus

EXO Chen finally came back to the music scene with his new EP "Last Scene," and during an online press conference, the singer talked about his new solo album, how he changed in the past three years, and more.

On Nov. 14, EXO Chen officially released his third solo album titled "Last Scene," along with the music video for the titular title track.

"I performed and met (fans) in August through SMTOWN Live, but it's been a long time since I've greeted (fans) with an album. I've honed my efforts into making good music, so I hope those who listen to my songs can revel in the good energy," the soloist said during an online press conference on Monday, November 14.

The EP was originally set for release on Oct. 31, but it got postponed following the Itaewon tragedy on Oct. 29. SM Entertainment and its artists joined the nation in mourning the many lives lost during the tragic incident.

"Last Scene" marks EXO Chen's return in three years since his second EP, "Dear my dear," came out in October 2019.

When asked about what changes have been made since his last release, the artist answered, "I've changed a lot through all my experiences in the past three years."

He continued, "I've thought a lot about what I was like in the past. There are parts that I regret and those that I liked, but those times gave me the courage to make a vow to begin again based on them."

Chen also said that he took the time to recharge himself to mature as a person and musician. And added that he is satisfied with the outcome compared to his previous two musical projects.

"For me, this album means a new beginning. I went through lots of changes, and I'm trying to take those as something positive. I hope to show who I am and more of my narratives through this album," he further stated.

EXO Chen's "Last Scene" contains a total of six songs including the title track of the same name, "Traveler," "I Don't Even Mind."

Featuring a beautiful piano sound and string melody, "Last Scene" is a ballad song where Chen delivers a man's feelings of loss and emptiness following a breakup with his lover.

"I felt empty and lonely when I first heard the song," the soloist said. "I tried to sing as if shouting so I could express the feelings of a man who doesn't want to let his lover go in the face of a breakup. It's a precious song to me because I exerted much effort to make it better."

But Chen said his new solo album is not all gloomy. The B-side tracks- "Traveler," "Photograph," "I Don't Even Mind," "Your Shelter," and "Reminisce"- feature various beats.

"The sidetracks have various keywords like love and happiness, and it shows how I feel about those emotions, so I hope people will delve into those emotions while listening," the singer said.

During the online press conference, EXO Chen also shared his thoughts about the 10th anniversary of his debut this year.

"Ten years is a long time, and I've been through a lot," he stated. "These days, I get flashbacks of my trainee days. I also remember the awkward moment when I first met the members. In fact, I want to go back to when I first debuted. I'm curious how I would turn out if I start over."

He also shared that the first EXO solo concert was the proudest moment in his 10-year career. "I also want to experience that feeling again as my younger self. It was a happy moment."

Finally, EXO Chen stated, "As the album signals a fresh start, I wish to greet people with a mature side of me and through various ways."
