EXO Chen Reveals How He Got His Stage Name, Number of Hours He Practiced Singing as Trainee

During his appearance on "GET REAL," EXO Chen, also known as Kim Jongdae, revealed why his stage name is "Chen" and how many hours he practiced singing when he was still a trainee.

On Nov. 18, EXO Chen appeared as the guest in the latest episode of the season 3 of DIVE Studios' "GET REAL." He talked about his stage name, training period, third mini-album "Last Scene," and more.

During the interview, Chen touched on his profile information, along with the hosts. Host Ladies' Code Ashley said, "Chen's real name is Kim Jongdae. How did you get your name 'Chen'?"

In response, the "Last Scene" singer explained that EXO debuted as a twin group: EXO-K and EXO-M. And since he was part of the Chinese subgroup, he chose "Chen" as his stage name to fit the concept.

"We debuted as a twin group. Our concept was to be a twin group: EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K for Korea and EXO-M for Mandarin. I was in EXO-M. To better fit for EXO-M, I got my name 'Chen'," the idol detailed.

The name "Chen," which is a common Chinese surname, means "morning" or "daybreak". It is the most common family name in Hong Kong, Macau, Zhejiang, Guangdong, and Fujian.

Ladies' Code Ashley then said, "You released your first album as a solo artist on April 1, 2019. You started YouTube in the same year. You have two million subscribers."

EXO Chen took the chance to thank his YouTube subscribers, as he only has a few chances to do it. "You know, I've never said anything about my channel on air before. I'd like to take this chance to thank my subscribers."

Ashley said, "You stay connected with your fans by singing cover songs on YouTube. Most of the time, you upload videos of cover songs. How do you choose your songs?"

He responded that he goes by his personal preference. He added, "The songs that I somehow ran into and the ones that match my preference. I actually pick them randomly. I usually select the ones that are on my playlist."

The Ladies Code' member followed up with the question, "So you don't have to work hard to prepare because you already know them?" EXO Chen answered, "Yeah, I don't think I did much preparation."

When host BTOB Peniel said that Chen doesn't need to prepare much because he's a great singer, the EXO member humbly said, "No, no. For me, it's... That's not the intention at all. You know, it's like when you spend a lot of time on the song... I find myself imitating it."

Host Junny chimed in, "Right. You kind of follow the singer's [way of singing]." Chen continued, "I tend to imitate the singer's nuances."

Ladies' Code Ashley commented, "As a trainee, you [might have] practiced singing so much" to which EXO Chen replied, "True, I did." He then revealed that he practiced for at least four hours every day during his training period.

When asked whose song he usually practices, Chen shared that he practiced a lot by singing Shin Yong Jae's songs. "Singing high notes was my specialization in the group," he added.
