Red Velvet X aespa Collab Draws Mixed Reactions Due to Center Position– Should It Be Irene or Karina?

Amid high anticipation for Red Velvet X aespa's "Beautiful Christmas," the member who should be in the center position drew mixed reactions from K-pop fans and netters.

SM Entertainment Drops Red Velvet X aespa 'Beautiful Christmas' MV Teaser

On December 13, a teaser for the "Beautiful Christmas" MV sung by Red Velvet and aespa has been released.

The video, which was uploaded on SM Entertainment's official YouTube channel, SMTOWN, immediately caught the attention of fans and viewers after seeing the nine members who transformed into Santa girls and presented lovely charms. According to fans, this reminds them of the iconic winter talent show from the 2004 classic movie, "Mean Girls."

The upcoming song, "Beautiful Christmas" is a carol dance song with a cheerful swing rhythm centered on rhythmical bass and piano performance. The lyrics contain the impression of looking back on the year with excitement for Christmas.

In addition to this, the song's message is that today is the best moment with a precious person and the refreshing vocals of the two groups double the exciting party atmosphere.

Expectations of K-pop enthusiasts, especially the two fandoms, MYs (aespa) and ReVeluvs (Red Velvet) are already high if what kind of special chemistry the senior and junior groups will show.

Irene or Karina? Center for Collab Song 'Beautiful Christmas' Draws Mixed Reactions

Amid fans' delight, some internet users took to online communities and social media platforms to discuss who should be the center for the song.

In context, the center position is usually given to the visuals or face of the group. The center must suit the concept and must be a good singer and dancer. This is a significant role since a center gains the most exposure in an MV, lines and makes the whole performance stand out.

Initially, fans were surprised to see Irene and Karina, both the centers of their respective groups at the center of the concept photos.

Indeed, both stood out in terms of beauty, Irene being K-pop's "original visual," while Karina has a CG-like appearance. People even praised SM for being smart and making the two idols the centers.

But when the MV teaser was dropped, K-pop fans and web users have divided opinions after seeing Irene as the only center of the collab group.

Initially, ReVeluvs rejoiced, leaving comments such as:

  • "Irene being the center of all centers."
  • "Visual of all visuals."
  • "Irene proving she's nation's center."
  • "Seeing Irene as the center as she should."

On the flip side, some internet users were frustrated and said:

  • "As expected, we've only gotten center Karina in the (photo) teaser."
  • "Karina doesn't have any issue, But Irene must be happy that she's a center while having a negative image in society."
  • "Irene is **** so if you put her on the side, her presence is 0. Even if Karina is on the side, she has a center-class presence."
  • "Don't start with us saying it's not a big deal. If Karina is the center, people will then question why Irene is not the center."

What are your thoughts on this?

On the other hand, "Beautiful Christmas" will be released on various music sites at 6 p.m. KST on December 14, and the MV can be seen simultaneously on the SMTOWN channel.

This will be the title song and pre-released song of the album, "2022 Winter SMTOWN: SMCU PALACE" which will be released on December 26 in collaboration with other SM artists.
