NewJeans 'Zero' Reminds People of THIS BIGBANG x 2NE1 Song — Here's Why

While NewJeans' new song "Zero" has been earning love from music fans, media and older K-pop fans can't help but be reminded of this iconic BIGBANG x 2NE1 song.

NewJeans' Achievements With Ad Campaign Song 'Zero'

Although NewJeans' new track "Zero" is an ad campaign song for Coca-Cola, its feats are truly impressive!

On March 30, the beverage company tapped the current hottest K-pop girl group as its global ambassador. The quintet then announced a music collaboration with the brand, so they released the ad campaign song "Zero" on April 3, along with its promotional music video.

"Zero" is a song that combines various genres like pop and R&B, and talks about the Coca-Cola Zero's thrill with NewJeans' unique charm.

The first half of the song captures the attention of music fans with its attractive bouncy rhythm. In the second half, the line "Coca-Cola is tasty" is repeated with a familiar melody, making listeners find the track quite addictive.

The lyrics, particularly the chorus, made it obvious that the song was only a CF song. Hence, it became controversial. But this didn't stop NewJeans' "Zero" to secure a spot on the music charts.

Two hours after its release, "Zero" immediately entered the top 10 music charts on various domestic music sites. In fact, it once topped Genie and Naver Vibe, while it peaked at No. 4 on the MelOn TOP100 as of 8 a.m. KST on April 5.

For a CF song, NewJeans once again solidified their presence as a "music powerhouse," knowing that even official releases from other K-pop idols and groups don't usually enter MelOn Top100 easily, one of the largest music-streaming platform charts in South Korea.

Aside from the song itself, NewJeans' MV is also receiving praise from K-pop fans. By April 6, the MV is expected to surpass 8 million views.

"Zero" then entered popular video rankings not only in Korea but as well as in 26 countries including Japan, Taiwan and Canada.

NewJeans' 'Zero' Success Reminds People of BIGBANG x 2NE1's 'Lollipop'

Despite it being a campaign song, the public response is truly massive. K-Netz and fans left rave reviews.

  • "The song is fun and good."
  • "It's so addictive."
  • "I'm repeating this song"
  • "Isn't this enough to trust and listen to NewJeans?"

Amid the attention it was receiving, NewJeans' new song reminded people and the media of BIGBANG x 2NE1's CM (commercial music) song, "Lollipop."

Just like the rookie group, the two legendary second-gen groups also dropped the song in 2009 when they were still rookies, yet it became a hit.

While NewJeans released "Zero" for Coca-Cola, "Lollipop" was ad music for LG's mobile phone of the same unit at the time.

Once it was released, it swept the top of local charts as well.

The only difference was how "Lollipop" concealed its promotional lyrics as newer fans will most likely think of a sweet candy first rather than a mobile phone, unlike "Zero," which openly included "Coca-Cola" in its lyrics.
