Crush Draws Divided Opinions For Talking About Depression & Anxiety— What Happened?

On his Instagram story, Crush opened up about depression and anxiety— only to receive mixed reactions from K-netizens. What's the reason?

Crush Criticized For Talking About Depression, Anxiety at 'Unfortunate' Timing

On April 21, Crush's deleted Instagram story sparked discussion in a popular online community for its content.

In particular, the Korean singer opened up on anxiety and depression, saying:

"Falling into anxiety and depression is like feeling afraid and tired at the same time. It's a state of fear of failure and having no desire to be productive. You want friends but you don't want to hang out with people, you want to be alone but you don't want to be lonely and at the same time, you feel paralyzed as you experience all sorts of emotions."

He continued:

"As self-love deepens, self-hate decreases."

Although it appears to be a harmless post of opening up to his fans about what he felt, his words didn't sit well with internet users who saw it.

First, people criticized him for posting the IG stories in an "untimely" manner. This is after the music scene is currently brokenhearted for losing a precious soul reportedly due to extreme choice for not being physically and mentally well.

  • "The timing is a little... If you really wanted to, you could've uploaded it after a while."
  • "I know what you're trying to say, but why..."
  • "Why is he making this about himself."

In addition to it being posted at the wrong time, web users also pointed out that his second story which says, "As self-love deepens, self-hate decreases," doesn't make sense and feels like invalidating those people who can't love themselves completely.

According to commenters, its message is "tone-deaf" and feels like saying, "If you just love yourself more, you wouldn't hurt yourself."

  • "This sounds ignorant and insensitive."
  • "He wrote it like those d*mn English textbooks (*can't be understood)."
  • "He sounds stupid."

Fans Defend Crush From Malicious Comments

As the discussion about the singer's IG story grows bigger, Crush fans took to social media to defend him, and called those who left hateful comments about him "fake" and "hypocritical."

Crush's supporters implied how it hasn't been even a week since an unfortunate incident happened in the music scene, but netizens are once again pushing someone at the corner.

Recently, web users have been talking about idols feeling pressure and not being able to open up about their true feelings and status but when Crush decided to reveal his real thoughts and emotions, some unapologetically criticized him and read into his words too much.

  • "Isn't it intended to be aware of the whole view? It's not rude. Why are you picking on him?"
  • "Unfortunate timing? Does he have to wait for his turn although he's struggling?"
  • "These artists are opening up and you won't just take it seriously. Why can't you empathize a little and stop overanalyzing his words?"
  • "Sometimes I couldn't just believe in humanity because of people like these (haters). I hope Crush gets the help he deserves."
  • "Why is this rude and insulting? Aren't you all overreacting?"
