Excerpt from Jessica Jung's Book Becomes Hot Topic Amid EXO-CBX Dispute With SM

An excerpt from former SNSD Jessica Jung's book became a hot topic in light of EXO-CBX's "slave contract" dispute with SM Entertainment.

Jessica Jung's Book Might Have 'Spilled the Tea' About 'Slave Contract' Amid EXO-CBX Lawsuit Against SM

In the middle of Chen, Baekhyun and Xiumin's (EXO-CBX) contract termination battle with SM Entertainment due to overdue payment and unreasonable contract clauses, former Girls' Generation Jessica's book garnered attention from K-pop fans.

In particular, after being "kicked out" from SNSD and SM Entertainment, Jessica Jung published two books about the life of K-pop idols, "Shine" (2020) and its sequel "Bright" (2022), which follows the story of Rachel Kim, a Korean-American idol-aspirant who debuted in a girl group called Girls Forever under DB Entertainment.

In this book, Jessica narrated Rachel's hard trainee life, how she was bullied by her co-members, and how her career crumbled after opening her fashion company due to jealousy.

While it was labeled "fictional," people who read her books are convinced that it was her own story and a way to redeem herself after being labeled the "villain" and "liar" among SNSD members.

People also claimed that Jessica "exposed" what happens in the K-pop industry behind the scenes, especially its dark side.

After the news about CBX arose, K-pop fans then revisited Jessica's book "Bright" and found out that she might have revealed the unfair contract SM is "forcing" on its artists, as mentioned by the trio.

In the excerpt, Jessica wrote about Rachel explaining to the character Jina that the K-pop contracts don't really last seven years, per the law requires.

"Oh, you naive child. You think DB doesn't have a way to get around whatever laws they want?

Somewhere in some bank in Switzerland, in some secure vault, are the three-year- extension contracts DB forced me and the rest of Electric Flower to sign the same day we signed our original contracts. Postdated, of course, so everything will hold up in court."

In the book, Rachel's character continued:

"Didn't anyone ever tell you? This glamour? This fame? It's all an illusion set up by the label. The execs. And then they'll take everything away from you, framing you as an irresponsible, high-maintenance diva, so that no other label will want to touch you with a ten-foot pole.

They'll fxcking ruin you and make it seem like you're the one who destroyed yourself. Look at me. My career is over."

Fans Revisit Jessica Jung's Book – Will SM Blacklist EXO-CBX?

Furthermore, fans also believed that Jessica Jung might have hinted at how SM Entertainment is putting its former artists on its "blacklist" after leaving the company.

In another part of the book, Jessica mentioned a team called N&G, who won the lawsuit they filed against the company DB for forcing them to sign a contract with 13 years of validity.

This was believed to be JYJ, who is the group behind the law limiting a seven-year contract among K-pop labels and their artists were created.

It was fortunate for the other artists in other companies, but Jessica hinted in her book how SM would make them agree to a three-year extension along with signing its original contract.

As the story continues in the excerpt, the book unveiled how DB would blacklist N&G in Korean broadcasts, and use successful groups under their company as leverage.

After reading this, the attention is focused on whether SM Entertainment will also try to put EXO on its blacklist, which might spark a huge fight not only between CBX but SM VS. EXO-Ls.
