Pokemon X And Y Update: Everything You Need To Know Before Watching 'ExtremeSpeed Genesect: Mewtwo Awakens'

As the 16th Pokemon film, "ExtremeSpeed Genesect: Mewtwo Awakens," draws closer to its July 13 Japanese premiere, here are some things you need to know about Mewtwo's journey and the story leading up to the film.

Mewtwo has been the subject of several Pokemon specials or films. More importantly, it is the subject of the first ever Pokemon movie in 1998, "Mewtwo Strikes Back."

The film establishes the first time Mewtwo meets the hero of the animated franchise, Ash Ketchum, who changes Mewtwo's perspective on the relationship between humans and Pokemon.

Mewtwo makes a return in "Mewtwo Returns" in 2000, an hour-long episode that acts as a sequel to "Pokemon: The First Movie." Mewtwo, having had a change of heart about violence and harmony, meets Ash again while attempting to hide from civilization at Mt. Quena.

Team Rocket and Kanto gym leader Giovanni is logistically the creator of Mewtwo as a clone of Mew, and continues to hunt for his grand prize in both stories. He is ultimately thwarted by the collected efforts of Ash and Mewtwo.

"ExtremeSpeed" is a continuation of Mewtwo's story along with our hero Ash. Mewtwo has reportedly traveled the world since the events of "Mewtwo Returns," and somehow has developed a new form called "awakened form."

The new form is expected to make an appearance in Pokemon X and Y once the games are released October 12.

As shown in the trailer, Mewtwo and our heroes' main adversary is the legendary Genesect, the final Pokemon in the fifth generation. The film is inspired by New York City, expressly Central Park.

Before the release, a two-hour anime special will air called "Mewtwo: Prologue to the Awakening" on Japan's TV Tokyo channel on July 11 at 7:00 pm.

According to Anime News Network, the special will air along with the television premiere of the 15th Pokemon movie, "Kyurem Vs. the Sword of Justice."

"ExtremeSpeed Genesect" is billed to be the final animated installment of the fifth generation, setting us up for Pokemon X and Y.
