BABYMONSTER Finally Makes Much-Anticipated Debut — But K-pop Stans Are Unimpressed

BABYMONSTER officially debuted with "Batter Up." Unfortunately, contrary to the fans' initial high anticipation, the group "failed" to deliver.

Here's how people are reacting.

BABYMONSTER Aims to Become 'Game Changer' With Debut Track 'BATTER UP'

BABYMONSTER, YG's first girl group in seven years after BLACKPINK, finally made their debut. On November 27, the group dropped their much-awaited track "BATTER UP."

The song contains the group's proud spirit and confidence to play as a "game changer" in the global music market.

It carries YG's signature deep hip-hop and powerful bass line sound, then adds a kitsch hook to showcase their unique image that differentiates from the label's senior girl groups, 2NE1 and BLACKPINK.

The song's title, "BATTER UP," is a reference to a similar position when playing baseball. BABYMONSTER seems to imply that the K-pop scene will hit a home run at the same time the group appears.

K-pop fans around the globe showed interest in the group and MV, amassing over 8 million views 8 hours after.

Prior to their release, the group has already been lauded for their skills, "monster-like" vocals, dance and rap skills, contrary to their "baby" (young) age and youthful appearance.

Other than this, they received a high level of topicality as a rookie coming from YG, one of the "top 4" largest K-pop companies that launched BLACKPINK.

Unfortunately, their name and skills alone weren't able to impress the K-pop community.

In online forums and social media platforms, fans expressed disappointment in BAEMON's debut song and music video. They criticized the song selection as their debut track, and describe the song as "outdated" and "sounds like a knockoff" of YG's past hits.

The MV is also pointed out to be "cheap-looking," which doesn't justify the visuals of the members.

Here are some of the comments:

  • "It looks like BLACKPINK that didn't spend money."
  • "The song sucks."
  • "I don't think the phrase 'hot topic' should be attached to something like this."
  • "Looking at the blue vest in the thumbnail, it just feels like the 2000s."
  • "With the MV, I can't help but talk about 2NE1 & BLACKPINK. But the quality is lower, and the song and styling are neither fresh nor attractive. It's like a really low-cost version. I'm really disappointed in it."
