BamBam, Seulgi & Wendy React to K-pop's 'Challenge' Culture: 'I think it's too much...'

In a broadcast, Red Velvet Seulgi and Wendy, along with GOT7 BamBam, dished on the emerging "dance challenge" culture in the K-pop scene.

Is it becoming more of an obligation rather than fun?

On December 15, YouTube's web show, "Bam House 2," posted a new episode featuring Red Velvet Wendy and Seulgi, who just recently released their new song, "Chill Kill."

MC BamBam, who debuted as GOT7 in 2014, immediately formed a warm atmosphere between the two idols who also debuted in the same year, looking back at their first impression of each other and their days of working together.

GOT7 BamBam, Red Velvet Seulgi & Wendy Share Thoughts on K-pop's 'Dance Challenge' Culture

While discussing various topics, the idols mentioned the dance challenge culture that's rampant in the music scene these days.

The challenge aims to shoot a short-form video of other artists performing another artist's new song either alone or with the idol itself.

This is considered beneficial for promotion, and at the same time, actively interact with other K-pop idols, which has been a thing in the past.

Most of the time, the artist who releases a new song can invite other idols to do it with them and make an appointment ahead, while in some cases, they do it impromptu.

During the broadcast, BamBam then asked Red Velvet if they had a lot of challenges. Seulgi then replied:

"You know, the whole culture has really changed into a challenge culture now."

BamBam continued to ask:

"Don't you sometimes think it's too much?"

Both female idols agreed and BamBam shared his opinion.

"I don't think it's scary but at some point, instead of being fun, it became like an obligation."

Wendy then voiced out her opinion, stating:

"You're right. For me, I really want to do them, but I'm so scared when what if I can't do the other team's dance properly? I would be so sorry."

Hearing this, Seulgi seconded and emphasized that there is a burden of learning the choreography in a short time.

"You have to do it in a short period of time."

However, BamBam also pointed out the concern that not doing the dance challenge will make an artist lose the opportunity to publicize their latest releases.

Seulgi then highlighted the importance of dance challenge, saying:

"You're right. You can't miss it because you get the most exposure with those short-form videos. We have to come up with a new direction for them. Like, instead of only dancing, how will we promote this song differently? We thought about it a lot this time. It's hard."

As the conversation went on, BamBam also asked if the idols tried to match a dress code with other artists, but Seulgi said that it was a pure coincidence.

K-pop Fans Share Take on 'Dance Challenge' Culture

Following the broadcast, netizens were also divided about the "dance challenge" culture, and weighed on its pros and cons.

Some think that it is a pity that the challenge became more of a burden rather than giving fun to the idols.

  • "It's a burden for singers, they can't even rest during the break because they have to memorize the choreography and film the challenge."
  • "I think the level of song and choreography has decreased because of the challenge."
  • "The dance in a place that doesn't deviate from the camera angle."
  • "The challenge seems to have changed too much, people mocked who could do worse or better."
  • "Zico, the originator of the trend, is not doing it well either."

On the other hand, some responded to its benefits.

  • "It's good to know other idol names through the challenge."
  • "It's good to see my favorite idol perform other idols' choreographies."
  • "There are pros and cons, but it seems to have a good promotional effect."
