George Lucas, Mellody Hobson Married: The Force Is Strong With These Two

George Lucas, Mellody Hobson married on Saturday at George Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch in California.

George Lucas, the visionary filmmaker who launched the “Star Wars” films that have become a hallmark of science fiction entertainment, married Mellody Hobson, who is the president of Ariel Investments and chairman of Dreamworks Animation, at 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 22 at Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, California. Lucas' son, Jett, was the best man, and his daughters, Katie and Amanda, were bridesmaids. New Jersey Senator Bill Bradley gave away the bride toasted the couple before the cake-cutting ceremony. Bradley has known Hobson since she was 17. Van Morrison flew in from Ireland to be the wedding band.

George Lucas and Mellody Hobson were married by the journalist Bill Moyers, who officiated at the ceremony. Bill Moyers is no stranger to the Skywalker Ranch. In 1987, Moyers interviewed the writer and mythologist Joseph Campbell, a close friend to the great American writer John Steinbeck, right before his death of esophageal cancer. In a statement to the press, Arianna Huffington, who was at the wedding, said that Moyers’ speaking was so moving that many couples who were already married felt like they’d renewed their own wedding vows. Moyers was a Baptist minister before he launched his illustrious career in journalism.

Moyers told the couple, "It only takes one person to have met the love of your life" before he quoted the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi, saying "When I heard my first love story, I was thinking of you."

Steven Spielberg, who is Lucas’ longtime friend and sometime collaborator, toasted the newlyweds, saying that The Force now had a name, Mellody. Director Francis Ford Coppola, who helmed “The Godfather” movies, read a poem by Maya Angelou. One of Mellody Hobson’s fellow Ariel Investments executives, John W. Rogers, toasted the bride.

This is Hobson’s first marriage. The 44-year-old executive wore a white dress that was designed by Peter Soronen. Lucas was married once before to film editor Marcia Griffin. They divorced in 1983.

Besides the “Star Wars” franchise, Lucas also created the Indiana Jones series and directed the 1973 film "American Graffiti."
