K-Pop and the Internet: Why JYP Met with Google Exec Eric Schmidt

If there is one person in the K-Pop universe who understands the important role the internet plays in the spreading of the Hallyu Wave, it is Park Jin Young.

The veteran singer and JYP Entertainment founder has always held that the internet is a crucial factor in the success of today's music industry.

Earlier this year, during a panel discussion at the Korea Society in New York City about K-Pop's worldwide popularity, moderator Jeff Yang recounted a story about the first time he met the music mogul more than a decade ago.

Upon meeting the influential JYP, the record executive introduced himself by saying, "I'm from the future," a line that at the time was a bit strange, but as things have played out, has proven to be incredibly true.

At the time JYP knew that digital music downloads and promoting singers via the internet was the wave of the future, also noting, "people only buy discs as a souvenir."

Flash forward to the present time and JYP's predictions are all too true. Korean record companies utilize the world wide web, particularly sites like YouTube, in ways unprecedented by their counterparts in other nations.

The internet is the gateway to the world and has been intrinsic in the spread of Korean pop music to fans thousands of miles away.

At this month's international conference 'Big Tent Seoul 2013', experts from across the globe came together to discuss the the popularity of Korean cultural content in other parts of the world and the internet's crucial role in the process.

Among the attendees, Google's executive chairman and former CEO Eric Schmidt and Park Jin Young.

The two big-wigs apparently had much to discuss with each other as JYP revealed through his Twitter that the two shared a meal together on October 29.

"What a great breakfast... so much to learn," tweeted the record exec who also added a photo of himself with Schmidt.

Park Jin Young was already ahead of the game when he began promoting his artists through various online media outlets, but after this week's high-profile meeting, the wheels have started turning again.

JYP Entertainment is amping up for one of its most popular groups, miss A, to make their long-awaited comeback next month and earlier this week revealed that early next year they plan to debut a new male idol group.

Fans are now curious to see if and how the groups' promotional activities will differ from the company's previous methods now that JYP has had the chance to pick the Google exec's brain for a while.

Nevertheless, the internet will, without a doubt, play a huge role in the continuing global success of Korean musicians, whether they are signed under JYP Entertainment or otherwise.
