Bernhard Goetz Busted for Pot; New York City Subway Vigilante Arrested Selling $30 Bag

Bernhard Goetz, who shot black teenagers for asking for quarters to play Pacman, was busted on marijuana charges.

Bernhard Goetz, who became infamous decades ago as the New York City subway vigilante, was charged with the criminal sale of marijuana.

Police say on Friday Bernhard Goetz sold a small amount of pot to an undercover police officer. Goetz met the undercover cop in Union Square Park. Police say they walked to 15th Street and Fifth Avenue. The cop gave Bernhard Goetz money and Bernhard Goetz gave him the marijuana. The pot was valued at $30.

Bernhard Goetz shot four black teenagers, Barry Allen, Troy Canty and Darrell Cabey, all 19; and James Ramseur, 18, on a downtown subway on Dec. 22, 1984. Goetz’s attack left one of the teens paralyzed. Goetz stopped shooting when he ran out of bullets.

A grand jury declined to indict Goetz on attempted murder charges.

New York City Mayor Ed Koch said at the time "I believe that most people believe that the criminal justice system is broken down and that the rights of society are not adequately protected under the law, under court procedures, under the various things that go into it, and I think that this case gives us the justification to get the legislature and the courts to do a better job."

Alfonse D’Amato, who was a republican U.S. Senator at the time said the Goetz case "demonstrates quite clearly people's outrage to the criminal behavior that's taking place."

D'Amato told a Senate committee his own bodyguards were afraid to ride New York City’s subway.

Goetz was ultimately indicted on four charges each of attempted murder and assault, but was only found guilty of criminal possession of a weapon on June 16, 1986. Goetz was sentenced to six months in jail, one year of psychiatric treatment, five years of probation, 200 hours of community service and a $5,000 fine.

Bernhard Goetz ran for Mayor of New York City in 2001. He lost.
