NBA Trade Rumors – Rondo To Dallas? Mavericks Need To Win Now Or They Lose Dirk Nowitzki; What Can They Offer The Celtics?

The NBA has teams swaying between the great divide. The Dallas Mavericks, who has a long term plan, may choose to contend now.

The addition of Monta Ellis, a big downgrade from their free agent of choice Dwight Howard, turned out much better than expected. Perhaps Rick Carlisle really is the most underrated coach in the league. They were not as bad as expected, and if they can add a piece or two, might be a contender in the West.

Of course, Dallas has other motivations. Dirk Nowitzki will become a free agent at the end of the season. He is also on the twilight of his playing years. Foremost on his mind is winning one more title before he retires. Dirk has even suggested taking a pay cut to have a chance at a title. If Dallas is not on the same page with Dirk, he could just sign somewhere else.

An All-Star point guard who has championship pedigree and a proven clutch performer is definitely a step in that direction. Rajon Rondo would be a dream for Dirk and Dallas. However, what would they give the Celtics?

Perhaps it's not as much as what they can give the Celtics, but what they can take. The Celtics now have 'bad' long term contracts-not just Gerald Wallace, but that list now includes Brandon Bass and Courtney Lee. They can still offer their own draft pick in next year's loaded draft..that is something Boston would covet.

The Celtics are apparently interested in Shane Larkin, a rookie languishing in Carlisle's bench (he obviously prefers veterans for that position). Dallas may give up all their expiring contracts and take all the Celtics bad ones and throw in a draft pick.

Clearly, the Celtics call the shots on this one because they are not under pressure to win. Even if Rondo is injured, no one perceives him as weak. Yet, the Celtics can still wait to play him and showcase his trade value to get a larger haul. Ainge should play his cards right, though. If the tank effort blows, his job is the first casualty.
