Biggest Movie Flops 2013 – ‘The Fifth Estate’ Is The Biggest ‘Turkey’ This Year; Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford Starrers Also In List

Along with other Thanksgiving traditions, Forbes also lists the movies that have flopped in the current year.

Since movies have varied budgets, the formula they use is the percentage of box-office gross sales in relation to their budget. The list proves that  moviegoers are a very fickle-minded lot. There aren't any sacred cows anymore unlike the era of bankable stars where any movie with Tom Cruise or Bruce Willis was a sure hit.

The top movie (which is the worst movie) is "The Fifth Estate." That was quite a shocker, as the Wikileaks issue was a big deal, and Benedict Cumberbatch is a very 'current' star.

The movie was in the news for the highly publicized appeal of Julian Assange, Wikileaks founder and the subject of the movie, to boycott the film claiming that it wasn't credible. Cumberbatch took it in stride and the producers relied on the showbiz dogma that 'all publicity is good publicity.' Apparently not. The $6million take was just a measly 21% of its estimated budget of $28 million.

The next movie on the list is "Bullet to the Head" by Sylvester Stallone. Admittedly, it's not a movie you would stumble upon when you browse the internet. The studio itself (Warner Bros) admitted that they weren't full throttle with the film's marketing. Sylvester Stallone was one of those sacred cows in the 80s and 90s when even his surname alone was enough to at least break even with the budget. With so much viral marketing going on, studios need to give a viewers a good reason to watch. Sly can no longer hack it solo, he needs a full crew of Expendables to carve a blockbuster.

The third placer was also a shocker. The ensemble cast is very impressive, a mix of old and new. "Paranoia" features a duel of mentors (Gary Oldman and Harrison Ford) and their mutual protege in a thriller with Wall Street undertones. Their protege is played by Liam Hemsworth, who wouldn't mind this too much, as he is part of sure blockbuster, "Catching Fire" from the Hunger Games franchise.
