DC continues its mission to challenge Marvel's dominance as they entertain the possibility of adding Aquaman. The King of the Seven Seas is high on DC's priority list, and will add a dimension to their universe that Marvel has somehow failed to explore.

While Marvel previously had plans to include Namor the Sub-Mariner in their cinematic universe, the plan has all but been scrapped. This leaves an opening for DC's marine character.

An Aquaman movie has already been pitched before, but the main reason why it has yet to progress is that the Aquaman character has been maligned in the comic books. This is hardly a factor now as comic book movies and universes have established their own canons. They have also expanded their fanbases on a massive scale. Viewers of comic book movies are no longer confined to zealous fanboys-it now includes anyone who wants a good time.

In the comics, Aquaman is the king of Atlantis. The legendary city (it's more of an entire realm) has advanced technology despite its undersea location. Will DC present Aquaman with the same direction that (possible spoiler alert) Marvel is taking with Thor?  Will Atlantis be an underwater Asgard?

DC has all the freedom to make revisions, as an entirely new universe is starting to unfold. The important thing is, DC has declared Aquaman a serious priority character. Speaking to Variety,  DC Entertainment's Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns reveals:

"He's a priority character for the company."

Now that it's established, Johns proceeds to sell us the idea of why Aquaman will be a great character onscreen:
"There is no doubt in my mind that this is one of the most well-known characters among super-heroes, and in popular culture. We are finding new areas in the ocean every day. It's as alien as going to outer space."

He does not confirm whether Aquaman will be on a solo feature film or be part of the Justice League. Perhaps even on TV. But these are all possibilities.
