NBA MVP 2014 - Anthony Davis Is Most Improved, Will He Be Most Valuable? New Orleans Pelican Is A Top 5 Player!

Anthony Davis is towering above the NBA. He's showing the league the freakish potential that drove him to become the top overall pick in 2012. Some observers believe he is a top 5 player!

Davis has a story that is reminiscent of Scottie Pippen, only more extreme. Pippen shared how he was bumped up from point guard to small forward, thereby inventing the "point forward" position when he had a growth sport.

Same goes for AD. He was a point guard/shooting guard in high school when he was about 6'3" but was already a national prospect. Before his senior year, he shot up to 6'9" and had a wingspan way in excess of 7 feet.

Apparently, he continued to grow a couple of inches and is now a center-forward. However, he still carries his point guard instincts and is more at home at the four spot, or even a very tall three.

He has certainly impressed with his season averages of 19.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and 3.9 blocks per game.  In contrast to the other top centers in the NBA(Dwight Howard's 17.7 ppg, 13.2 rpg and 2.3 bpg and Roy Hibbert's 11.6 ppg, 8.9 rpg and 4.1 bpg) Davis could definitely make the all NBA team if they gave it now.

His new teammate, All Star point guard Jrue Holiday, points out that Anthony Davis is tasked with carrying their team. Holiday speaks to the San Antonio Express: "I mean, he's the franchise. He's that guy. He's the go-to guy, and everybody here knows it."

Davis could reignite the era of the franchise big man. He's being compared to the franchise big man of San Antonio, Tim Duncan. He could usher a new era in New Orleans as Duncan did with the Spurs.

The league is now dominated by point guards to small forwards when you look at the last set of awardees since 2008: Lebron James, Derrick Rose and Kobe Bryant.

Dwight Howard has been dismissed as an MVP candidate and so is Dirk Nowitzki, the last big to win it (although he has a remarkable perimeter game). Most centers' function is concentrated on defense. Anthony Davis was in that mold at the start, but now, he has expanded his game.

This early, he is the frontrunner for the Most Improved Player award, but who knows, maybe it's the MVP award he is shooting for.
